12074Infused with a small-town atmosphere, Galway is the kind of place that feels like an escape, even if the aim is to live here year-round. True, some residents choose to be seasonal, thanks to the presence of Galway Lake, a prime vacation spot in the area. But this rural town is more about promoting a grassroots way of life, with small businesses and farms playing a foundational role in day-to-day happenings.
Home prices can range from the mid $200,000s to the upper $400,000s. A three-bedroom midcentury Cape Cod represents the entry point of the market here. Given the rural surroundings, it’s not uncommon for such homes to be situated on two acres of land. Even the interiors can have nods to the country lifestyle, with amenities such as woodstoves in the living room. Decorative hedges and driveways leading to attached garages add a suburban touch, but by and large there isn’t a uniform row of neighbors typically seen in suburbia. In the higher price range, look for split-level homes from the early 2000s. For example, a four-bedroom split-level from 2003 can be had for $350,000. Again, you’ll see somewhat secluded lots covered with mature trees, giving a sense of privacy.
There’s no shortage of outdoor recreation here. At the Galway Youth Commission, sign up for youth sports leagues, like soccer and karate. Containing ball fields, soccer fields and a picnic shelter, Dockstader Park is another place to enjoy athletics. Galway Lake is of course a popular destination for fishing, boating and lounging by the water. The Galway Golf Course is known for being quirky: at just nine holes, it’s shorter than other courses, but offers fun and creative challenges. Pioneer Hills Golf Course is a more traditional 18-hole course, but as the name suggests, it’s hilly, giving visitors a unique experience.
The Village Pizzeria is a rustic Italian restaurant that’s been open since 1988. The restaurant has received consistent awards from Wine Spectator for having an extensive list of offerings. The menu features everything from five cheese ravioli to roast pork with gravy and mashed potatoes. Galway local, cock and bull. The Cock ’n Bull Restaurant is rustic in its own way, too, with a barn-like setting and cozy fireplace. Emphasizing folk music events and steak dinners, this is clearly an all-American experience. There’s a strong farm-to-table ethos, too, as owner Rick Sleeper notes. “Sometimes that means growing it ourselves.” For a more casual time, The Galway Local offers a café with breakfast sandwiches – plus, it fills a crucial role in the community as a grocery store. Johnston’s Winery is another entertainment attraction, ideal for sampling a variety of fruit wines: while the grapes are imported from California, the blueberries and raspberries are grown on the 70-acre farm.
Shopping can run the gamut, from the practical to the pleasurable, but there’s a distinct focus on earthiness. Village Home & Garden has all sorts of tools and gardening supplies, while Milburt Farm & Greenhouse is a dedicated nursey with everything from herbs to flowers. Certain Age Antiques is great for combing through home goods from yesteryear, and The Grounded Ginger is a spa-like shop offering herbal teas and essential oil blends.
Joseph Henry Elementary enrolls 450 students in kindergarten through grade six, and maintains a 10 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Niche gives the school a B-plus in academics and an A-minus in the teachers category. Galway Junior/Senior High enrolls nearly 400 students in grades seven through 12. Niche gives the school a B-minus in clubs and activities, as well as a B in the teachers category. The school is known for offering business and tech classes, along with AP courses.
Most of Galway is laid out in a loose grid, so navigating the neighborhood can be easy. It’s only around Lake Galway that residents will find more curving roads that turn into cul-de-sacs. Otherwise, Route 147 intersects with East Street and West Street in the center of town —also known as the Village of Galway— creating a memorable compass-like layout. Residents will find a classic vibe, with a public library, fire department, high school and post office clustered in this central spot. Route 29 runs east-west along the top of Galway. This is a connection to the wider region, including Interstate 87, which is 15 minutes west in Saratoga Springs. But within Galway itself, Route 29 is lined with small businesses, as is the area around the Village of Galway.
