Quiet living at the base of a mountain ridge
Seated at the eastern foot of the Shawangunk Mountains in New York, Gardiner offers outdoor recreation ranging from rock climbing to nearby nature preserves. They’re affectionately called the “Gunks” by locals and draw visitors from around the world who hope to ascend their slopes, which only rise just over 2,000 feet skyward. Elevation isn’t a necessary feature of getting outdoors in the region, though – the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail winds through several towns, and depending on the season its traffic includes those on foot, bicycles and horseback, while still others slice through the winter snow on skis. Gardiner settles even more into the landscape via establishments like wineries and farms, and it’s not hard to find a spectacular view or two. “It’s a charming town surrounded by nature with access to art galleries, restaurants, shopping and all the outdoor activities your cardio can take,” says Donna Brooks, an associate broker and managing partner of the Clement, Brooks & Safier Team at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Hudson Valley Properties. “It’s just beautiful.”
Climbing the Shawangunk Mountains
The Shawangunk Ridge is part of the Appalachians, but goes by different names depending on what state it’s in. For New Yorkers, the “Gunks” are an outlet for challenging rock climbing if people want to channel their inner Alex Honnold, albeit with gear attaching them to the ridge faces. “The ‘Gunks’ are literally world-class climbing,” Brooks says. “People come up to climb the ‘Gunks’ from all around the world.”
The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail unfurls over more than 20 miles, accommodating people traveling by foot, bicycle, horse or skis, the latter in the winter. Paralleling an old railroad bed and crossing several bridges, it has a trailhead in Gardiner and passes through areas like New Paltz en route to Kingston. “It provides easy biking access to the town center,” Brooks says. “It passes through orchard land and you can have a stop for a craft beer. It has access to Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska and all sorts of fun stuff.” Those inclined to other extreme pastimes take to the air. Skydive the Ranch has operated for more than four decades and offers tandem skydiving, solo jumps and more. The renowned outlet also has several different planes, and enthusiasts can free-fall from 10,000 feet or more.

Nature preserves in and around Gardiner
Parts of the Minnewaska State Park Preserve stretch into Gardiner, comprising much of the west side of the neighborhood, while portions of the Mohonk Preserve take up parts of Gardiner’s north side. In either, visitors can trek along trails, wander through forests and look out from cliffs, all while having the options to bike, hike and climb. Beyond Gardiner, within the preserves, are even more renowned spots. “Recreation is huge,” Brooks says. “People come up from all over to enjoy Minnewaska. Mohonk Mountain House is also really close by. That’s a world-class resort. In Gardiner, you’re at the base of all of that and have access to all of that. It’s a huge draw in our area and it’s beautiful here.”
The mountain house has Victorian architectural stylings and sits on the edge of Mohonk Lake, both surrounded by a network of small mountain roads, but it’s not the only resort in Gardiner. Wildflower Farms Resort by Auberge sits near the center of the neighborhood, where stays include vistas of the rolling landscape in cabins and cottages.

Savoring wines or international fare
Several wineries, including the Robibero Winery and the Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery, are scattered throughout Gardiner, and bed-and-breakfasts like Watergrasshill and The Inn at Kettleboro are popular destinations. German fare is served up at Mountain Brauhaus and Italian food is on the menu at Lombardi’s, both adding international flair to the cuisine in Gardiner. “In Gardiner, the Mountain Brauhaus is a second-generation, family-owned business,” Brooks says, adding that the same goes for Lombardi’s. “The parents developed it and the kids are carrying on the tradition. Both of them are super, super popular and local-to-the-bone local.”
Tuthilltown Distillery pours cocktails and offers tasting events and tours. “Gardiner offers a range of attractions for adventurers, food enthusiasts and families,” Brooks says. “It’s got multiple pick-your-own farms – apple farms, strawberries, you name it.” Some of the farms and markets there include Wright’s Farm and Market, Tantillo’s Farm Market and Four Winds Farm. Larger stores, like Walmart and Target, are just under 20 miles south in Newburgh.

Homes with views of nature
Some properties in Gardiner come with the added bonus of mountain views or sweeping landscapes, while still others are encased by woodsy foliage for a natural layer of privacy. “Home prices vary, as do styles,” Brooks says. “There’s beautiful estates, historic stone houses and older farmhouses.” Single-family housing styles range from standard Cape Cods and ranches to split-levels and colonials, while contemporary and custom homes are also found in Gardiner. Other designs evocative of mountain cottages and cabins dot the landscape as well. "When they go outside, they have a view of the mountain ranges," says Alex Stier, a NYS licensed associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North. Prices for single-family homes can swing from under $100,000 to over $2 million, but the most common range is generally between $500,000 and $700,000.
With plenty of land available, Gardiner is a great place to build a ranch home.
In downtown Gardiner, one is more likely to find multi-family homes and modest lot sizes.

Schooling northeast in New Paltz
Gardiner kids head northeast for schooling in and near New Paltz. Duzine Elementary School hosts up through second grade, receiving a B-plus from Niche, while Lenape Elementary School enrolls third, fourth and fifth graders while also garnering a B-plus rating. Graduates then move on to the B-plus-rated New Paltz Middle School for grades six through eight. New Paltz Senior High completes grade-school education for Gardiner students and scores an A with Niche, standing as the highest-rated public high school in Ulster County. Niche also ranks it in the top 100 public high schools, out of almost 1,300, in the entire state of New York. New Paltz Senior High is also regarded for the history of its wrestling program, which won more than a dozen titles between 1975 and 1993.

Access to the Thruway just east
Route 44 meanders its way through the northern and central parts of Gardiner, exiting the eastern edge en route to passing through three other states over the course of nearly 250 miles. “It’s uber-convenient,” Brooks says, adding that New Paltz and Kingston are both short commutes away. “It’s 90 miles north of the city on the thruway and 15 minutes off of the thruway.” The New York State Thruway spans over 500 miles and runs from near Lake Erie through much of northern New York before turning south. Major areas it connects include Albany, Syracuse and Buffalo, and it reaches its end close to Manhattan.
