The Hub of Henry County
Named for an Upstate New York college town, the rural Illinois city of Geneseo features a similar American “Main Street” atmosphere, with Gilded Age-era brick storefronts lining commercial corridors and midcentury-built housing fanning out across this town’s wide expanse. Every sort of convenience, from a Fareway supermarket and a Walgreens pharmacy to local restaurants and schools, can be found throughout this self-described “Home of the Maple Leafs,” which sits just 25 miles from the Quad Cities metropolitan area.

Geneseo's historic homes
Geneseo residents tend to live in split-level, colonial and ranch-style homes, with historic homes built before the Civil War sitting next to post-World War II construction and 2000s residences. This abundance of housing options offers a variety of lifestyles for aspiring Geneseo homebuyers; perhaps it may be along a quiet side-street or in a close-knit subdivision such as Country Manor. Homes vary in price from $65,000 to $380,000, reflecting diversity in size, style and age.
Larger, newer homes can be found on the edge of town, giving Geneseo residents many options.
Many historic and original homes have been updated and are well-maintained.

State Street shops and eats
For a small town, Geneseo is brimming with amenities. Highway 6 is home to much of Geneseo’s retail scene; here, locals can shop for groceries at the Fareway, pick up their prescription at Walgreens, or take care of their home and auto needs at the local Blain’s Farm & Fleet or O’Reilly Auto Parts. The heart of town is home to a variety of restaurants and bars expressing Geneseo’s Midwestern character; State Street Café invites diners to start their day with bacon and eggs or enjoy a hearty burger for lunch. The nearby Geneseo Brewing Company, while established in 2014, continues a well-established Midwestern tradition of brewing, to local acclaim. Shops of other kinds are located along State Street, including unique clothing stores like the Red Barn, whose boutique inventory is housed within a colorful building with a Western-themed interior.
Geneseo's charming downtown is full of historic buildings with shops and restaurants.

Building a "beautiful valley"
Founded in 1836 by Puritan settlers from New York, Geneseo means “beautiful valley” in the Iroquois language. The city may now consist of paved streets running over level ground, but, as this city is surrounded by farmland and bordering the Green River, one may still observe a sense of natural isolation that once informed its name. This small town is a wellspring of local culture, and pride in it. Mayor Sean Johnson says, “Family is a core principle in what makes Geneseo such a wonderful community. Many residents and their families have made Geneseo their home for generations. Our community is unique and has much to offer, from our historic downtown with ample shops and dining experiences to our many parks and recreational venues.” Geneseo’s rich history – including its contributions to the Underground Railroad and other major aspects of America’s story - is on full display across town, both in its monuments and in its historic downtown area. In addition to the employment opportunities offered by hubs such as Rock Island and Davenport, Geneseo residents also work in local service industry jobs, from the local Hammond-Henry Hospital and city government jobs to work at one of the city’s many retail and dining establishments.
Geneseo traces its history back to early settlers that established the town in the 1830s.
Historic Downtown Geneseo is full of small businesses and renovated apartments.
