A well-established neighborhood with historic homes and charming brick storefronts
Downtown Geneva is located along the western shore of Fox River, just 43 miles west of Chicago. The neighborhood is home to a friendly and active community, most prominently felt across several local events throughout the year. “Downtown Geneva has a quaint and community-oriented feel,” says Marsha Wallace, a Realtor with Fox Valley Real Estate and resident of Geneva. Its rich history is showcased across its residential landscape and appreciated at the many downtown local shops and eateries within walking distance of every resident. “The downtown area is always active, with folks out going for walks, shopping and dining,” says Wallace.

Walk to the shops of downtown
A 0.3-mile walk, roughly 7 minutes for most, is the farthest any resident will have to walk to reach downtown Geneva’s thriving shopping and dining scene. “There are so many locally owned restaurants, you could spend weeks going out every night without eating at the same place twice,” says Wallace. Residents can enjoy a fresh breakfast at Buttermilk Café, known for its pancakes, or a southern Italian-inspired dish and live music outside on the Villa Verone Ristorante Italian patio. Between meals, residents can peruse furniture at Bell Jar Vintage, try on outfits at Wild Roots clothing boutique, or window shop at unique stores like Fair Game Hobby Store and Galena Garlic Company. Just west sits Geneva Commons, home to big-name retailers like Pottery Barn, Lowe’s, and others. Ingredients for meals at home are picked up next door at Fresh Market or the Geneva French Market from April to November, which features fresh produce, baked goods and more.
Residents can stop by for lunch and dinner at one of the restaurants along South 3rd Street.

The homes of Downtown Geneva
During fall, bright orange, yellow and red maple leaves cover the community’s sidewalks and residential streets. Historic homes showcasing a variety of styles, from Colonial Revival and Cape Cod styles to national folk and bungalow styles, work as a backdrop for morning strolls. These homes were built from the mid-to-late 1800s through the 20th century and look brand new thanks to homeowners' restoration efforts and modest landscaping, seen in shrubbery and small flowering plants running parallel to walkways. Bringing the community into today’s time are new traditional-style homes that have popped up throughout the community since the early 2000s. Those looking to move into Downtown Geneva can expect a price from $300,000 for a condo on the east side to $700,000 for a larger freestanding home. However, recently built homes along Fox River can reach up to $1.5 million.

Bordering to the east is Fox River, where River Park lines the banks. Here, residents stroll along the stone walkways while taking in views of the water. During July, residents enjoy live music at the park’s terrace as a part of the Summer Concert Series. Picnics are had under the shade of tall oaks at Wheeler Park, where many go for a round of mini golf or to practice swings atop its tennis and baseball facilities. A moment of peace can be found while reading a book at the Geneva Public Library, where locals can join a book club and participate in discussion groups or craft workshops.
