Baxter has downtown proximity at lower price points
Baxter has all the charm of historic living with a more affordable price tag. Buyers looking in this area are often drawn to the bustle of Eastown and East Hills, but are seeking a slightly smaller home. You're still minutes from the shops along Wealthy Street, and homes are full of character. But it’s a more residential area here, with a central park and a community center that offers programs and support services. With Downtown Grand Rapids just 2 miles away, living in Baxter means you can feel centrally located without the higher costs of nearby neighborhoods.
Historic homes include bungalows, Victorians and American Foursquares
Walking down Baxter’s tree-lined streets feels like a trip through the late 1800s and early 1900s. While you won't see homes as elaborate as those in Heritage Hill, you’ll still find classic Michigan bungalows with enclosed front porches, Victorian-era architecture and boxy American Foursquares with dormer windows. Some of the larger homes are split into multiple units and rented out. “It’s a really vibrant neighborhood with lots of culture because there is a really good mix of people,” says Allyson Fea with EXP Realty, who has sold several homes in the area. “Some people have lived there for so many years, and there’s also a decent amount of rentals.”
Established homes showcase elegant Queen Ann architecture.

More affordable housing compared to Eastown or East Hills
Smaller bungalows and homes in need of renovations start in the mid-$100,000s. Freshly updated properties can get into the upper $300,000s. The median list price is in the lower $200,000s, and as a general rule, Fea says that homes in Baxter get more affordable the farther you go south from the desirable Wealthy Street. “Typically, people go to Baxter because it’s more affordable than East Hills, Eastown or Heritage Hill, but it's still close to all the amenities that those places have,” explains Connor Anderson with ReSIDE Grand Rapids, who has over 5 years of experience in the city.
Walkable shopping and dining along Wealthy Street
Wealthy Street is a historic red-brick street lined with local businesses. “Baxter is very walkable where you butt up against Wealthy Street,” Fea says. “You have Wealthy Theatre and all the local restaurants.” Some local favorite spots include:
The Electric Cheetah: American diner with more than 40 flavors of house-made root beer and a laid-back, retro vibe.
Meanwhile Bar, Inc: Neighborhood bar with classic pinball machines, an outdoor patio and indie music playing on the jukebox.
Squibb Coffee & Wine Bar: Coffee shop in the daytime and wine bar at night, known for its upscale charcuterie boards.
Wealthy Market: Neighborhood staple for groceries, grab-and-go meals and drinks.
Louise Earl Butcher: Local butcher shop known for quality meats, house-made sausages and gourmet grocery items.

Commute to downtown Grand Rapids in less than 10 minutes
There are bus lines along all four edges of the Baxter neighborhood, so it’s pretty easy to use public transportation here. By car, the 2-mile commute to downtown Grand Rapids is less than 10 minutes. You can also head north to Cherry Street, which has designated bike lanes. It’s usually less than 15 minutes to bike or scooter into the city.
Things to do include a park and a community center
Apart from the Wealthy Street corridor, Baxter is mostly residential. However, you can still find some community-focused things to do:
The Baxter Community Center has a childhood development center, a food pantry and a full calendar of events, including gardening programs and fitness classes.
Joe Taylor Park has a popular splash pad in the summer and a pavilion with grills.
Wealthy Theatre is a historic venue that shows local plays, live music and independent films.
Choose from nearby public schools and private options
The neighborhood is part of Grand Rapids Public Schools, which allows parents to apply to send their kids to any school in the district. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy and Campus Elementary School are both less than a mile from Baxter, so kids might be able to walk to school. With the statewide Schools of Choice program, you can also apply to attend schools outside the city. However, top districts like East Grand Rapids and Forest Hills can be tough to get into and typically offer only a few lottery seats.
Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy offers competitive student-teacher ratios.
