Downtown
Coffee to go from Lion's Mouth Bookstore and Coffee
Much of Downtown’s shopping and dining is located along North Washington Street. The Creamery Downtown, is a newly built and lively brunch spot along Fox River known for its mimosas and eggs benedict. Less than a block south Lion’s Mouth Bookstore and Coffee blends the comfort of cozying up to a good book with finding commuty and kinship with regular book clubs, author visits and other events. Their recently added café makes it one stop shop for bookworms, but you can also grab and go. Samantha Merks, resident and director of marketing at Downtown Green Bay Inc. says, “I like to get a book and coffee from Lion’s Mouth and take it out onto CityDeck to read and relax.” She also says Angelina Restaurant, an up-scale spot, is as a prime date night for all things Italian. Groceries are available at SuperValu Foods off Webster Avenue, but international markets like Main Oriental Market and Makelelesho African Shop sit throughout the neighborhood. Though home to small, locally owned shops like Haberdasher Co and Furs & Clothing of Distinction, residents also head 4 miles east to the big-name retailers in East Town, an indoor shopping mall.Finding community at CityDeck
CityDeck, which sits along Fox River, is the city’s community’s most frequented outdoor space. The intent of the waterfront development was to encourage residents to reengage with the waterfront and it is working. It is the spot to be for lunch during the day,” shares Mirkes. “It’s great for an outdoorsy person to get out of the stuffy office for a moment.” The promenade is the place to be when it comes to community, whether signing up for weekly Yoga on The Deck meetups or taking the pup for a stroll while catching views of the river.Friday's on The Fox, football and Saturdays at the farmers market
CityDeck is also the place to be for city-planned events like Fridays on The Fox. It’s common to find a crowd dancing in front of the live musicians who play while the sun sets over the Fox River. They also host Family Shows every other Monday, welcoming little ones to participate in revolving entertainment opportunities for the whole family, like magic shows and balloon art workshops. When summer rolls around, residents spend mornings picking up local produce and goods from the Saturday Farmers Market on South Washington and Doty Streets. “it’s been going on for 108 years,” shares Mirkes. “It’s something people look forward to every year here. We even have vendors where people can create their own flower bouquets to take home.” Sports fans can catch a Packers game at Lambeau Field, 3 miles away, or a concert at the historic Meyer Theater along South Washington Street. The homes of Downtown
On the northern side of East Walnut Street sit most of Downtown’s condo buildings built in the last 20 years, typically featuring red brick cladding. These condos range in price from $200,000 to $320,000, slightly less than Green Bay Metro Area’s average. South of East Walnut Street are a handful of free-standing homes showcasing a variety of styles, from bungalows to Queen Anne styles, built in the early-to-mid 1900s, which sit between office buildings. These are typically used for investment duplex opportunities and fall within the same price range as the neighborhood’s condos. Residential sidewalks connect front doors to various dining and recreational opportunities near CityDeck. Though there is no specific ordinance, it’s not common to find a building taller than five stories high, as the city tends to build out and not up. However, city officials and planners aim to densify the neighborhood in the coming years with mixed-use development projects.Fine arts at East High School
Students prekindergarten through 5th grade will attend Howe Elementary School, before heading to Washington Middle School, both of which maintain a C rating on Niche. Meanwhile, older students will take classes at East High School. The Red Devils have a B-minus rating, an Institute for the Fine Arts and host the Show Choir Sh’Bango, an annual competition.Commuting from Downtown
Residents traveling from the area can hop on State Route 172 for a 9-mile drive east to catch their Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport flights. Those needing medical attention don’t have to travel far, as HSHS St. Vincent Hospital sits just a mile south off Porlier Street. Alongside this, residents can reach main throughways, Interstate 43 to the north and Interstate 41 to the east, in less than 5 miles for convenient drives to surrounding areas. Residents can also take advantage of the several Green Bay Metro bus stops, which carry passengers through the Green Bay Metro Area.
