Community events and nearby green spaces
MacArthur Heights is a quiet, western Green Bay suburb offering a strong sense of community where neighbors aren’t afraid to say hello. Home to an active neighborhood association, residents regularly gather for annual clean-ups and mid-summer celebrations with nearby neighborhoods. Similarly, green spaces like John Muir Park and He-Nis-Ra Park offer many ways to recreate outdoors, including outings with fellow neighbors. “When I moved here years ago, I breathed a sigh of relief at how friendly and safe this community and the greater area is,” says Cheryl Williams, president of MacArthur Heights Neighborhood Association and current resident. “Our slogan is smile and wave, and that’s exactly what we do, even if we don’t know that person yet.”
There are several ranch style homes with nice curb appeal in MacArthur Heights.
The ranch and split-level-style homes MacArthur Heights
Pine and oak trees line the community’s lived-in, cracked and repaved residential streets. Despite the absence of sidewalks, streets are wide enough for residents to take afternoon strolls, facilitated by shade found beneath the high-reaching tree canopies. While on walks, residents can appreciate the neighborhood's age through the mid-to-late 20th-century ranch and split-level-style homes that fill the community. These homes showcase two-car garages, occasional basketball hoops and equal parts front and backyards, which comprise 0.25-acre average plots. Potential homebuyers can expect a price range that starts at $192,000 and reaches up to $457,000 for one of the few larger, custom-built homes.
Southwest High School scores a B by Niche.
Troy's House donations at Southwest High School
MacArthur Elementary School teaches prekindergarten through fifth grade and maintains a B-plus on Niche. However, the district plans to close the elementary school in the next few years. Students will then attend either King Elementary School or a new proposed school at the site of Kennedy Elementary, both of which are within a mile of the neighborhood. Meanwhile, older students head to Lombardi Middle School, which has a B-minus rating and Southwest High School, which holds a B rating. The high school also sits along Packerland Drive, within walking distance of homes on the northern end of the community, and participates in Troy’s House, an ongoing donation center that equips students with school supplies, clothing and other necessary items.

Winter skiing at Enos Colburn Park
Within the suburban streets of western Green Bay sit the old-growth trees of He-Nis-Ra Park, located one block west of the neighborhood. Its trails are a go-to spot for those looking to bike or take the pup for a stroll. For a more traditional park experience, many head to the shaded playgrounds of John Miur Park, located directly east, on the other side of I-41. The on-site ice skating rink makes it a frequented spot in the wintertime, though many head to Enos Colburn Park on snowy days. “A neighbor of mine bought a bunch of skis from a rental shop that was going out of business,” Williams shares. “During snows, he fits us into the skis, and then we all head to Enos Colburn Park to ski together.” Meanwhile, those with a green thumb tend to the community garden at Bridge Point Church off of Wood Lane.
The stores and eateries of West Mason Street
Most shopping and meals out occur less than a mile north, along West Mason Street. A strip mall directly north is home to a Sam’s Club for groceries and a neighboring Walmart Supercenter for all retail needs. On the other end of the parking lot sits Schlotzky’s, a walk-up deli spot known for its sourdough sandwiches, which can be taken to go while running errands. Also along West Mason Street, a mile west, is Gallagher’s Pizza–West, the local spot for Chicago-style pizza and a sports bar to catch Packers games with friends.
The events of MacArthur Heights Neighborhood Association
MacArthur Heights Neighborhood Association has an active Facebook page that keeps residents updated on relevant news and community events. Its annual Clean Up Day takes place at Beaver Dam Park, where residents work to keep the waterway clean and, in turn, keep the area from flooding. The association also works with neighboring communities, including invites to Block Party in the Park, hosted by the Fritsch Park Neighborhood Association, an evening of free food, photo booths, music and more. According to Williams, Summer Market on Military is a frequented spot for those in the neighborhood. Located 2 miles northeast along Military Avenue, the farmers market offers local produce and goods every Thursday afternoon from early June to late October.
Immediate access to I-41
Interstate 41, bordering directly east, provides access to the city’s major throughway loop, offering convenient commutes to any part of the city with help from I-43 and State Route 172. A 5-mile trip along South Ridge Road leads to downtown. At the same time, Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport sits 3 miles southwest, off Airport Drive. Though situated nearby, residents don’t experience much noise pollution from overhead passing planes. A similar distance northeast leads to HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Shawano Avenue, while Northeast Wisconsin Technical College off Larsen Road sits a closer 1-mile drive north. Green Bay Metra bus stops also line Lombardi Avenue and West Point Road, both of which run through the community.
