Green is a large suburb with a small-town feel
Green, a southwest Oregon suburb of about 8,000 people, has a small-town feeling 4 miles from downtown Roseburg. The timber industry fueled its economy in the mid-1800s, and today, logging, trucking and construction companies all do business here. The neighborhood sits next to Interstate 5, the major west coast thoroughfare linking people with work and other amenities in Roseburg. “Green doesn’t have many restaurants or shops – but it’s still very close to everything,” says Esther Guarino, a Broker/Realtor with Trueblood Real Estate who has lived in the Roseburg area for nearly a decade.
Contemporary homes starting at $350,000
Manufactured homes are priced between $150,000 and $300,000. These homes have manicured front lawns and fenced backyards. Contemporary homes with attached garages and driveways leading to wide sidewalks range from $350,000 to $500,000. “People like Green because the property taxes are more affordable,” says David Jaques, Broker/Owner of Al Pine Real Estate 1, who has lived in the area for nearly four decades. It’s just a few miles south of Roseburg, so homeowners have a Roseburg address but pay Douglas County prices. “Those who are watching their budget — which you have to these days — are able to buy a little more house for a little less than in [Roseburg],” he says.
Gardening at Roseburg High
Children can attend school through the Roseburg Public Schools District. They go to Green Elementary School, which receives a C-plus from Niche, before moving on to Fremont Middle School, which has a B-minus and a well-regarded band program that performs at local events like the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival. B-rated Roseburg High School has a greenhouse and plant sales where prices start at $2 a plant. There are no private schools in Green.
Hop on Oregon 99 or Interstate 5
People hop on Oregon 99 to reach work in Winston. The roadway leads drivers to Interstate 5. Green also has plenty of bus stops -- the public bus service has a route that goes northbound to Umpqua Community College 13 miles away and southbound to the Seven Feathers Casino and Resort in Canyonville 21 miles away. In case of emergency, the VA Roseburg Health Care System is 6 miles away. The domestic-only Eugene Airport, which has seven airlines, is about an hour and a half away, and the Portland International Airport is about 3 hours away.
Baseball games at Stewart Park
The South Umpqua River runs along the west side of the neighborhood. Boats enter the river from Happy Valley Boat Launch, which is also a swimming destination during the summer. Stewart Park is a large greenspace 6 miles away in Roseburg stretching more than 200 acres. Golfers swing on its 9-hole public course, runners sprint on its trails and kids play on the playground. The YMCA of Douglas County and the home field of Umpqua Community College’s baseball team are also in the park.
Karaoke nights at Workman’s Bar and Smokehouse
Sushi & Rolls is a popular eatery in Green. Workman's Bar & Smokehouse is the place to go on the weekends, with karaoke nights on Fridays and live music on Saturdays. Four miles away, people can get groceries from produce market Brosi Sugar Tree Farms. Ray’s Food Place is the place to go for other everyday essentials, and Kim’s Klozet, a women's clothing store, is right next door.
Annual fall festivals and fairground events
The Brosi Sugar Tree Farms has an annual Harvest Festival in October. Each fall, people get lost in its corn maze, pick pumpkins, line up for hayrides and eat food from local vendors. The Douglas County Fairgrounds host the annual fair every August, and Graffiti Weekend is a 3-day car show in July that’s been going on since 1983. The fairgrounds also host monster truck races and bull riding competitions, and people drink wine at Spangler Vineyards, Green’s local winery.
Oregon wildfire season
Southwest Oregon is prone to forest fires during wildfire season every year between July and October. The state insurance regulator requires wildfire coverage in every homeowners policy. Oregon Wildfire Response and Recovery advises people to create a 30-foot space around their homes for prevention. Locally, the Douglas Forest Protective Association and Coos Forest Protective Association work with the Oregon Department of Forestry to prevent wildfires.
