Just south of Akron, Green is known for its highly rated school district, seasonal community events and access to several lakes, including the Nimisila Reservoir. While the community has a suburban essence, with access to retailers and major thoroughfares, many of the homes sit on multi-acre wooded lots. “You get a little bit more land with Green than anywhere else around Akron,” says John Scaglione, a 25-year-long resident of the city and a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Schmidt. “The location is just beautiful, especially living on the lakes.” Green's roughly 27,000 residents can enjoy seasonal activities including water skiing, fishing, hiking and golf.

Relatively low property taxes
The median single-family home price In Green is $350,000, which is more than double Akron's median and below the national median. Prices can range from $160,000 for early 20th-century fixer-uppers to $1.3 million for newly built homes. "The resale value is tremendous," Scaglione says. "The homes have always gone up in value." Housing options here range from New Traditionals and Colonial Revivals to contemporary designs and ranch-styles. Just south of East Turkeyfoot Lake Road, two newly built subdivisions feature both condos and single-family houses. "People think Green has the highest taxes in the Akron area, but they are actually really low," Scaglione says. He adds that Green's major businesses absorb most of the tax burden.

The highly rated Green Local School District
Green Local School District earns an A rating from Niche and has a 97% graduation rate. Niche also reports that the reading and math proficiencies for the district are also well above both state and national averages. Local high school students can also enroll in partnership programs with the Portage Lakes Career Center, which offers pathways and trade skills in fields like the automotive industry, cosmetology or sports medicine.

The City of Green's parks and recreation division oversees 10 green spaces with amenities like playgrounds, soccer fields, baseball fields, splash pads and amphitheaters. The city also has two sports complexes where youth soccer and football leagues can face off. Green is also home to multiple private country clubs and a public golf course. On Green's west end, Portage State Park and the Portage Lakes are popular spots for boating, camping and other outdoor activities. "Just the other day we were snowmobiling on some trails around the lakes," Scaglione says.

Seasonal events at Central Park
The community comes together for a year-round circuit of events at the city's various parks. For example, Boettler Park Pond hosts an annual fishing derby for children 12 years of age and under. While the Central Park Summer Celebration features a weekly program of events that includes outdoor movies, food truck fairs and performances by the NEO Jazz Orchestra. The park also hosts Christmas festivities, including photo ops with Santa and cookie decorating classes. Commuting to Akron and Canton
Akron-Canton Airport is on Green’s southeast corner and offers domestic flights. “The runways are next to farmland, so people aren’t impacted by too much noise from the airport,” Scaglione says. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is about 50 miles north via I-77. Green’s top employers include the school district, Summa Health Green Medical Center and a chocolate factory called Fannie May Confection Brands. Many residents also commute to downtown Akron 12 miles north on I-77, or to Canton, 15 miles south. On the city’s north end, South Arlington Road is lined with Akron Metro bus stops.
According to FBI data, the city’s violent and property crime rates are below state and national averages. Over the past decade, the violent crime rate has increased, and the property crime rate has decreased.
