The housing stock in Friendly Acres consists primarily of sprawling, 3,000-square-foot estates from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Most houses in the community are stately and sophisticated brick Colonial-revival homes defined by their grand stature and timeless charm. “The market is strong and competitive here in Friendly Acres. A lot of people want to live here,” says Shelia Sanders, a Realtor with Re/Max Realty Consultants. “It’s a very established neighborhood where the houses are not necessarily that cookie-cutter type.”Most homes feature ample square footage with four to five bedrooms and a minimum of three bathrooms. Ranch-style homes and neotraditional homes can also be found in the area. Price tags accompanying these homes are diverse and can reach the million-dollar mark. More commonly, prices fall between $500,000 and $700,000. Most of the half-acre properties in the neighborhood are freshly manicured with garden arrangements, trimmed bushes and plenty of trees.

Students in Friendly Acres attend Guilford County Schools, an above-average school district with nearly 70,000 attendees. Children start at Claxton Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of A-minus and is ranked the sixteenth-best public elementary school in Guilford County. Next, they attend Kernodle Middle School, which represents Guilford County’s above-average distinction with test scores that exceed the state average. The school has an overall Niche grade of A-minus and is ranked the fifth-best public middle school in the county. Teenagers attend Western Guilford High School, home of the Fighting Hornets. Residents can connect with their community at the Friendly Acres Neighborhood Club. The membership-only facility features an array of amenities. Members can enjoy a day sitting by one of two pools on a lounge chair or play doubles on the tennis court. The club also features a small fitness center where residents can get in their daily workouts. The heart of the club is its 1,200-square-foot clubhouse, which frequently hosts holiday celebrations and private events.The fun continues at Country Park, two miles east of Friendly Acres. Country Park is one of the largest parks in the city and is jam-packed with amenities. For just two dollars, visitors can take a spin on the carousel that sits adjacent to the water. Locals can also enjoy time on the water by renting a pedal boat and exploring the park’s small lake. The park additionally features a mountain bike zone, a paved walking trail and a dog park.

When it comes time to shop, Friendly Acres has plenty to offer nearby. A few miles west are two buzzing shopping centers — New Garden Crossing and Jefferson Village Shopping Center. Across the street from one another, it’s easy to hop back and forth from each center, grabbing groceries, new clothes and a bite to eat. The shopping centers feature stores like Target, Michaels, The Fresh Market and Lowes Foods, to name a few. Locals can fuel their mornings with fresh bagels from New Garden Bagel Company. The bagels come in various flavors that can be topped with an assortment of cream cheese varieties. For dinner, there’s Lemon Indian Cuisine, with the tandoori chicken or tikka masala being favorite menu items.
