Friendly Acres brings an established neighborhood vibe to Greensboro

In northwestern Greensboro, Friendly Acres is a neighborhood defined by its residential atmosphere and mature tree canopy. Large homes line winding streets, and residents spend time swimming and competing in rounds of pickleball at nearby members-only clubs. Compared to the adjacent neighborhood, Friendly Acres North, Friendly Acres has homes and lots that tend to be smaller. However, houses here usually cost less compared to those in the neighborhood to the north.

Large stately homes in Friendly Acres

Large brick homes built in the 1980s and '90s come with an average of 3,000 square feet. Lots, which have a median size of about a third of an acre, are large enough to fit backyard pools or large patios. A few houses border a small pond in the center of the neighborhood, and private docks enable homeowners to fish or relax by the water. Colonial Revival architecture is common, but homes were also built in various styles such as split-level, Cape Cod and Tudor-inspired New Traditional. “It’s a very established neighborhood where the houses are not necessarily that cookie-cutter type," says Sheila Sanders, an associate with Re/Max Realty Consultants. Homes usually sell from the mid-$400,000s to the upper $700,000s. Residents can join the voluntary Friendly Acres Neighborhood Association, which puts on community events and takes care of landscaping in common areas. Annual dues range from $295 to $395.

Get active at members-only clubs and a large public park

Members of the Friendly Acres Neighborhood Association often hang out at Friendly Acres Neighborhood Club, home to a swimming pool and tennis courts. Those who prefer pickleball and beach volleyball can pay to join Pinetop Neighborhood Resort, a recreation and social club just outside the neighborhood. For free recreation, head to the playground at Friendly Acres Park or to the 200 acres that make up Country Park, one of the largest green spaces in Greensboro. Animal-shaped pedal boats and bobbers attached to fishing line float on the park's two lakes, while mountain bikers and runners take to the nearly 2 miles of trails.
