Beneath a grove of trees in the Tar Heel State
The residential enclave of Hamilton Forest is blanketed by woodsy parks, serene gardens and florally decorated front yards. While just a few miles from downtown Greensboro, Hamilton Forest is a suburban neighborhood from the 1960s with a densely wooded park as its centerpiece. “I love living here because it feels like a city with a small-town vibe, despite being the third-largest city in North Carolina” says Amanda Garner, director of local nonprofit Greensboro Beautiful and resident of 12 years. “Going to work, you never have to get on a highway. It’s very natural, not overpopulated with buildings. It really feels like the classic image of a hometown.” This neighborhood provides residents with all the convenience of the city’s amenities from beneath a well-maintained canopy of trees.

Living beneath the Carolina trees
Most homes in Hamilton Forest were constructed between 1960 and 1980, with very little construction outside of that timeframe. Style and price point can vary; on one end of the spectrum prospective homeowners will find two- and three-bedroom Cape Cods or ranch-style homes listed around $350,000. On the other end, larger Colonial Revival homes with five bedrooms price closer to $600,000. Residents maximize their quarter-acre lots, with many adding trimmed bushes, Japanese cherry blossoms and flowering shrubs to the verdant gardens surrounding them. “The hardwoods are plentiful,” says Realtor Ed Purgason with EXP Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area for 32 years. “Absolutely beautiful trees that tower over 100 feet tall.”

Greensboro Beautiful’s NeighborWoods
Greensboro Beautiful is the local nonprofit responsible for maintaining green space across the city, including the Bog Garden, the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden, the Greensboro Arboretum and the Gateway Gardens. “We’re focused on restoration and beautification,” Garner says. “We work to remove invasive species, encourage native plants and to restore green spaces across Greensboro.” An important program in achieving this goal is the NeighborWoods community tree planting program, which works with the community to help beautify Greensboro. “Neighbors can call and request plantings,” Garner continues. “We work with churches and community groups, and we’re in the process of planting along the MLK corridor. We want to bring green spaces to all of Greensboro, not just the wealthy areas.”
