In Old Randleman, winding roads pass through a landscape of trees and fields as they link together homes scattered across this community south of Greensboro. Just west of Old Randleman, pine trees stop at the shoreline of Randleman Regional Reservoir, a lake that attracts paddlers and anglers. This laid-back, rural setting has inspired many residents to call Old Randleman home for their entire lives. Though the community is fairly remote, Interstate 73 connects residents to Greensboro, where many go for shopping, events and work.

Spacious properties and a few farms
While single-family homes are spread out and acre-plus wooded lots give many homes a sense of privacy, Old Randleman isn’t as much of a farming community as it once was. “There are farms out there, but way less farms than there used to be,” says Tracy Carter, a Realtor with Kelly Wirt Realty Group who grew up in the area. Like some other nearby communities, Old Randleman has been home to several generations of families who have enjoyed its peaceful, rural environment. “Folks have lived there for years and years and years. People don’t typically move out. They stay and their kids stay.” Because of that, houses don’t go on the market often, but, when they do, they typically sell from the lower $200,000s and the upper $400,000s.

Boating, bass fishing and kayaking at Randleman Reservoir
Randleman Regional Reservoir spans roughly 3,000 acres to the west. The lake has earned a reputation as a prime bass-fishing spot, and paddlers often explore the many inlets and coves. Boats and kayaks hit the water at entry points such as the marina off Adams Farm Road and the launch at Southwest Park. In addition to a kayak launch, Southwest Park has baseball fields, a dog park and hiking trails. Racing fans may want to check out the Petty Museum to see legendary racecar driver Richard Petty’s childhood home and his collections of stock cars, trophies and pocketknives.

Annual car show during PettyFest and more events in Greensboro
In March, the Petty Museums celebrates PettyFest, a day when car enthusiasts show off their rides, food trucks and vendors set up around the museum property, and Petty himself shows up to sign autographs. More festivals and events happen in Downtown Greensboro, including:
First Friday, a monthly art walk that starts in the afternoon and stretches into the evening
Fun Fourth Festival, a street festival celebrating Independence Day with live music, food trucks and fireworks
North Carolina Folk Festival, a free weekend of live music in September

Old Randleman Road and Randleman Road converge near the middle of the community, and that’s where you’ll find the few businesses in Old Randleman. One of the best-known spots is Bill’s Pizza Pub, which opened at the intersection in 1969 and continues to serve the community. Children are served by the Guilford County Schools district, which includes the highly rated Southern Elementary School and Southern Guilford High School, the latter of which has career education programs focused on agriscience, education and health sciences. Students in these programs participate in hands-on projects. For example, agriscience students study horticulture by working in the school’s greenhouse, while teens studying animal science complete weekly chores in the campus barn.
I-73 extends northward to Greensboro and I-85.
Getting to Greensboro
Interstate 73 takes drivers north toward Greensboro, and they can reach the heart of the city in 12 miles. On the way toward downtown, Interstate 73 intersects with the Greensboro Urban Loop, a highway that encircles the city and speeds up trips around the metro area. For farther travel, Piedmont Triad International Airport, about 20 miles away, has direct flights to more than a dozen U.S. cities.
