When it comes to shopping and dining options, The Thicket really is in thick of it. But thanks to a green ribbon of trees along South Buffalo Creek to separate homes from the action, residents have a verdant, quiet pocket to call their own. “It’s a very nice neighborhood,” says Paul Linear, Realtor with Keller Williams. “It’s got a mixture of new and established homes, and the location is very prime because you have all the major box stores, the interstates and West Wendover Avenue, which is the area’s main artery, right there.” Zane Frye, broker with Keller Williams, also considers the neighborhood’s proximity to amenities to be a huge strength. “The Thicket is really convenient to Greensboro. It’s the location that’s the biggest draw,” he says. The Thicket scores a 9 out of 10 on the CAP Index for larceny and an 8 out of 10 for burglary, compared to national averages of 4. The Thicket’s overall CAP Index crime score stands at 7 against the national average of 4.

Split between detached homes, townhouses and condos
Roughly a third of The Thicket consists of detached homes, while another third is townhouses and condos. The remaining third is apartments. In the detached homes section, streets are quiet, wide and provide ample room for parking. Lawns can be flat or hilly, and many residents decorate them with flowers, shrubs and ornaments. Most detached homes are situated on quarter-acre lots with fenced-in back yards and follow Colonial Revival and ranch-style designs, with the occasional Cape Cod. Prices range from $250,000 to $350,000. Speaking of the neighborhood’s condominiums, Linear observes, “The community is very clean. The HOA takes care of the roofs, and there’s not a lot of trash on the premises.” Condos and townhouses typically fetch between $100,000 and $200,000.

Shops and restaurants galore
West Wendover Avenue is lined with shopping centers and superstores. From Kohl’s and Target to Costco and Walmart, many residents don’t need to venture farther than 3 miles to run errands. “You even have car dealerships nearby, so if you have work on your vehicle that needs to be done or even need a new car, they’re right there,” Linear says. Restaurants, both local and national, aren’t hard to come by either. “There’s one little restaurant I like called Jake’s Diner on the corner of Big Tree Way and Wendover,” Linear says. “They’re known for their great breakfasts and American food, like hamburgers. I get the Fat Cat Special: a breakfast with turkey bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, pancakes and biscuits.” Other dining options include China Buffet, Sarah’s Kabob Shop and Marco’s Pizza.
