North Main
Mixed architectural styles in the city’s residential center
The area’s earliest homes date back to the 1920s, with much of its development happening within the mid-20th century. Buyers can also find contemporary homes in the area, including new traditional houses and custom-built estates. Prices range from the $270,000s for condos and smaller mid-century homes with minor updates to $1.2 million or more for new homes with impressive floorplans. “Inventory has been low in North Main for years. Most houses sell for more than $500,000, and they don’t sit without an offer for more than a day,” Toler says.Reliable groceries, record stores and diner fare
Many of North Main’s most prominent retailers are situated along Wade Hampton Road on the neighborhood’s east side, Pleasantburg Drive to the north and Stone Avenue on the south end. Familiar brands such as Harris Teeter, Dollar General and The Home Depot are available nearby. But residents can also find an exciting blend of specialized retail options within the neighborhood, including eclectic music on vinyl at Horizon Records and Cabin Floor Records, seasonal clothing and gifts at We Took to the Woods, and antiques from Dodson Dig Company. Dining staples nearby include Northgate Soda Shop, a classic diner and neighborhood favorite built in a former warehouse building, and Asada, which specializes in traditional and experimental Mission-style tacos. Fans of varied American fare and vegetarian items can check out The Bohemian Café.Live bands, boozy book clubs and basketball at local bars
Close to the neighborhood’s south side along Stone Avenue, Stone Pin Company is a six-lane bowling alley and bar set in a converted warehouse. The Community Tap offers craft beer and fine wine on tap with a rotating selection of food trucks, while Other Lands Brew offers events like weekly yoga and book clubs. Locals can also catch football and basketball games on one of the 34 TVs at Hall of Fame Sports Grill.Acclaimed Greenville educational opportunities
“Kids walk to and from school all the time in North Main,” Toler says. Students in the North Main area can attend schools within the Greenville County Schools system, ranked among the top 10 school districts in the state by Niche. Stone Elementary Academy has operated since 1917, growing from a simple schoolhouse into a large, arts and communication-focused magnet school. The school holds an A grade on Niche. Older students can attend the A-ranked League Middle Academy, another arts magnet school, and Greenville Senior High School, which offers law, finance and business programs and also earns an A.Mini golf, hiking and neighborhood parks
Pocket parks such as Croft Park and North Main Rotary Park provide reliable alternatives to residents’ backyards. Less than 2 miles south of the neighborhood in Downtown Greenville, McPherson Park offers an 18-hole miniature golf course, though residents will want to have their own putter and golf balls before visiting. North Main residents are also 5 miles south of Paris Mountain State Park, which offers 17 miles of hiking/biking trails and 1700 acres of recreational space.Catch a trolley to downtown Greenville
North Main connects to the rest of Greenville with US-29/Wade Hampton Boulevard on the east side, US-276/Stone Avenue to the south and Rutherford Road near the north side, along with Main Street running through the neighborhood’s center. Residents can reach Downtown Greenville with a 2 mile drive. The nearest hospital, St. Francis Downtown, is about 4 miles southeast of the neighborhood. Most flights into Greenville land at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, 14 miles east. Bike lanes are available along Main Street. Multiple Greenlink bus stops are available along Wade Hampton Road and Rutherford Road, and a free trolley offers service from the center of North Main to the heart of Downtown Greenville on Thursday and Friday evenings and all day on the weekends.Important things to know
