A picturesque community by Schuylkill River with a lively downtown
Since the late 18th century, Hamburg, Pennsylvania, has enjoyed a scenic location along the Schuylkill River and just south of the Appalachian Mountains. Today, this small Berks County borough houses over 4,000 people and centers around a cluster of locally owned restaurants, shops and entertainment spots. “It’s a nostalgic community with a vibrant downtown business district and abundant natural recreational opportunities,” says Our Town Foundation (OTF) Executive Director Deena Kershner. OTF oversees the preservation and revitalization of downtown Hamburg. The borough also features homes averaging in the low $200,000s, a century-plus-old single-screen movie theater and immediate interstate access.
Entertainment venues and restaurants at historic downtown Hamburg
Downtown Hamburg’s dozens of buildings have stood for generations, and The Hamburg Strand Theater occupies one of the oldest. The building was constructed in 1799 and underwent several iterations before becoming a movie house in 1920. After a 2013 change in management, it underwent a slew of renovations, welcoming a digital projector and a new screen. Today, the theater shows first-run and classic films, including themed holiday series. Several thrift and antique stores neighbor the Strand, plus artisanal co-ops like the Art & Craft Gallery of Hamburg, which OTF manages. Popular downtown eateries include Four Twelve, the Strand’s next-door neighbor to the left. Since 2016, this hip café has served sumptuous, whipped cream-topped coffee and tea beverages, plus creative waffle-based entrees. Two locally run breweries, 1787 Brewing Company and Cooperz Brewing, operate farther down Fourth Street. Meanwhile, locals can grab groceries from Redner’s Warehouse Market across from Cooperz Brewing or the Weis supermarket at the center of downtown.

Explore historic townhouses from the 1800s in downtown Hamburg
Many downtown Hamburg residents reside in townhouses from the 19th and early 20th centuries. These quaint abodes feature facades of wood, stone and painted brick and start in the mid-$100,000s, which could get a move-in-ready two-bedroom from the 1870s. Newer builds, from World War II-era Cape Cods and midcentury ranch-style houses to 1960s split-levels and 1980s Colonials, appear farther from the center of town. Detached homes generally cost in the $200,000s and $300,000s. Prices top out in the low $400,000s, which might buy a four-bedroom Colonial over 3,000 square feet with a finished basement and a backyard pool.

Enjoy water activities by Schuylkill River
Outdoor escapes are abundant in Hamburg, according to Kershner. “We have a lot of hiking and biking trails, and the Schuylkill River runs parallel to the town,” she says. “So there are water activities like kayaking, canoeing, tubing and fishing. On the river’s eastern shore, Hamburg Community Park welcomes locals to play basketball, tennis and baseball or jump in the pool during the summer. Residents are within a 20-minute drive of eye-opening natural sights like Hawk Mountain, a nationally renowned hawk migration spot, and Crystal Cave, a shimmering underground cavern.

Navigating out of Hamburg
State Route 61 runs alongside Hamburg to the west, while Interstate 78 runs through the borough to the north. Via the former, Reading commuters have about a 30-minute drive without traffic, while I-78 offers as little as a 35-minute trip to Allentown. Locals can find big-box retailers near where the two roads intersect to the northwest, including Walmart Supercenter, Cabela’s and Lowe’s.
