Lakefront and rural living along Lake Erie
Approximately 40 miles southwest of Buffalo, Hanover is one of the 27 towns that make up Chautauqua County. Hugging the banks of Lake Erie, some of Hanover's most notable communities include the Village of Silver Creek, the town's residential and commercial hub, and Sunset Bay, a seasonal lakefront community. Farther inland, small hamlets are scattered between acres of farmland and woodland. While Hanover’s rural nature dominates the landscape, its blend of lakefront and small-town living stands out with a close-knit community. "Everybody knows each other, but they are never up in your business unless you need help, and then they are there to help," says Louis Dispenza, a local Realtor with Midtown Realty, who has been in the industry for almost 20 years. "That's why we built our home here 35 years ago."
During the warmer seasons, Sunset Bay Beach is filled with many fun summer time activities.
Adjacent to Lake Erie, locals have access to the marina that allows for them to enjoy the lake year round.

19th and 20th-century homes
Hanover's most populous areas include the Village of Silver Creek and the hamlet of Sunset Bay, a seasonal resort community along the shores of Lake Erie. In Silver Creek, compact residential streets give way to an assortment of 19th- and 20th-century homes priced from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$300,000s. Properties in Sunset Bay sit within the same range, with lakefront properties selling for over $400,000. In Forestville, most homes range from the $100,000s to the $200,000s and are clustered near the heart of Main Street, offering residents a rural, small-town lifestyle.
Country roads pass by secluded properties on acreage. Nineteenth- and 20th-century split-levels and ranch-style homes can range from the low $100,000s to the upper $200,000s. Other styles include custom-built homes with acreage priced from the $400,000s to the $600,000s, with a few properties selling for as much as $800,000. Hanover earns a CAP Index of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Many homes found in Hanover's residential areas are designed with ranch style balusters to create a covered front porch protecting the entrance from the elements year-round.

Green spaces around the village
At the heart of Silver Creek, Park Place Park, known locally as the village square, offers a tranquil green space with benches and a gazebo. From the square, a paved pathway leads to an adjacent park behind the Anderson-Lee Library. Amenities include a ballfield, playground and tennis court, while a pedestrian bridge along Walnut Creek leads to a basketball court. Three miles away, Sunset Bay Beach, also known as Hanover Town Beach, offers sandy shorelines along Lake Erie for beachcombers, sunbathers and swimmers. Multiple marinas and a public boat launch dot the nearby Cattaraugus Creek.
Farther south, Hanover's Bicentennial Park sits along a rural road between Silver Creek and Forestville. A grassy field, a playground and a covered pavilion with charcoal grills make it an excellent spot for picnics and parties. However, reservations are required to access the park grounds. About 5 miles away, Forestville's small hamlet features a mile-long wooded trail. Hikers need to be aware that the trail is closed during the busy hunting season. In addition to hunting, popular winter activities include snowmobiling and snowshoeing, with local clubs like the Sunset Drifters and the Cherry Creek SnoGoers.
Five miles away is the Tri-County Country Club. This semi-private 18-hole course is open to the public on select days of the week. Hanover is also home to the Rosebrook Golf Course, another seasonal 18-hole course that welcomes locals and visitors near Sunset Bay.
Sunset Bay is a beautiful location in Hanover where locals have access to Lake Erie.
Locals enjoy going to Hanford Bay Community Club for some recreational activities for members of all ages.

Restaurants and shops near the shore
Silver Creek is the town's commercial hotspot, with grocers like Tops Friendly Markets and Save A Lot. Down the road, Hanford Country Market sells fresh produce, pizza and subs. Locally-owned establishments include auto shops, hardware stores and Stagecoach West, an equipment and apparel store for horseback riders, with saddles, equestrian tack and more. Ten miles west, big-box stores sit south of Interstate 90 in Dunkirk. Retailers here include Walmart Supercenter, The Home Depot and T.J. Maxx.
A handful of restaurants line Silver Creek's Central Avenue. However, some of the town's most popular eateries reside near Sunset Bay. Aunt Mille's Family Restaurant & Bakery stands out with classic American Italian fare. Their cozy interior and delectable desserts attract crowds looking to savor sweet eclairs, cinnamon rolls and cannoli. One mile down the road, Cabana Sam's Beach Bar & Grill is the town's only lakefront restaurant-turned-seasonal summer nightclub. Sandy beaches, colorful sunsets and frozen tropical drinks are just some of its highlights, along with live music and daily deals like Wing Wednesdays and Fish Fry Fridays.
Locals have access to the Hanover Lanes year round.

Festival of the Grapes
As the gateway to Chautauqua County's Wine Country, family-owned vineyards and wineries are scattered around town. Every September, Silver Creek hosts an annual Festival of the Grapes in honor of its roots. "It's the town's largest event," Dispenza says. Three full days of festivities include grape stomping, a dice run, wine-making competitions and tastings in the heart of the village. Additional entertainment options include amusement rides, live music, food, and a farmers' market in the adjoining village square. Hanover also borders the Cattaraugus Territory, where Seneca Gaming & Casino attracts tourists and county residents.
Commutes around Hanover
The Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System offers public bus service throughout the town's most populous communities. Buses regularly stop at the Silver Creek Rite Aid, while limited service is available in Forestville. Due to the area's rural nature, many residents rely on personal vehicles. Interstate 90 runs through town and leads about 45 miles northeast to Buffalo Niagara International Airport. New York State Route 39 and U.S. Route 20 lead west to Dunkirk's Brooks Memorial Hospital, while other significant thoroughfares include New York State Route 5.
