Harahan offers loads of amenities just west of downtown New Orleans

Harahan has come a long way since its days as an agricultural community in the 1800s. Now a busy residential corridor stationed along the Mississippi River just 10 miles west of downtown New Orleans, Harahan serves as one of the top landing spots for those considering life in Louisiana's Jefferson Parish. Containing loads of homes, celebrated eateries and an elementary school included in the National Register of Historic Places, Harahan offers much more than a run-of-the-mill suburban pocket. "Harahan and River Ridge are very family oriented, and it's generation after generation. Everyone wants to stay close to home," says local Realtor Randie Leggio with Latter and Blum. "The area is very connected because it's small and safe."

Homes in Harahan feature great architectural diversity

Harahan offers a wide range of home styles and frameworks. Brick ranch-style dwellings with hipped roofs constructed in the 1970s and '80s are abundant throughout the area, though it's not uncommon to find Cape Cods and residences with Craftsman elements. Many homes range in price between $200,000 and $500,000, but newer Craftsman-style builds with ample square footage can top out around $800,000. Plus, on the grounds of the now-defunct Colonial Golf and Country Club is The Blake at Colonial Club — an assisted living community serving senior citizens of Harahan and beyond.

Residents frequent Harahan's treasured Seither's Seafood

Jefferson Highway is lined with acclaimed eateries and retail stores. National chains are a quick drive away, but locally owned restaurants steal the show. Smoked is a top spot for barbecue staples, and Seither's Seafood is revered for its po' boys, crawfish and outdoor patio seating. Jefferson Highway leads locals to the fun of the Big Easy

Harahan locals are often car-dependent, though there are also numerous Jefferson Transit bus stops along Jefferson Highway. Those commuting to the city can get to downtown New Orleans by traveling east on Jefferson Highway and accessing Route 61, which feeds directly into town. Harahan is also a 20-minute drive from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, which sits 9 miles north.

Residents should take caution during hurricane season

Harahan did not suffer nearly as much devastation as other communities in the New Orleans metropolitan area during Hurricane Katrina, though major storms are still a factor to consider. Hurricanes make landfall within 50 miles of New Orleans once every seven to 11 years, per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, so residents should take proper precautions during hurricane season.
