Barry Square, Hartford is a vibrant city with a diverse and engaged community.
A community coming together and addressing issues
Named after the first pastor of the St. Augustine Catholic Church, Father Michael Barry, Barry Square is an urban neighborhood just 2 miles south of downtown Hartford. While the CAP Index gives Barry Square an overall crime score of 7, higher than the national average of 4, neighborhood organizations like the Maple Avenue Revitalization Group (MARG) and St. Augustine come together with residents to improve the area. “The MARG is very good at addressing issues that arise from the community,” says Hyacinth Yennie, local resident and chairwoman for MARG. “We are working on signage, lighting throughout the neighborhood and public works.” Residents of Barry Square also have access to the Catholic Church that stands at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Webster Street. “St. Augustine has been a beacon for the community,” says Yennie. “We also have a beautiful library that does a lot of work in the community.”
Bus lines weave throughout the neighborhood, with Interstates 84 and 91 to the west and east.
Bus lines weaving throughout and hospital to the north
Bus lines weave throughout the neighborhood, with Interstates 84 and 91 to the west and east respectively. For buses, the fare for an all-day pass is $3.50, while a 10-ride ticket costs $14.75. Day passes range between $8.75 for three days and $63 for a 31-day pass. Ticket prices include free transfers between local lines, as well as unlimited rides within the specified time limit of a ticket. The neighborhood is just south of the Hartford Hospital, and with sidewalks that cover all the roads, residents can walk for medical care if needed.
Multi-family Colonial Revival homes with a few condos
Barry Square consists mainly of Colonial Revival homes that have been transformed into multi-family dwellings. Most two- or three-story homes will be converted into second- and third-floor apartment units. Multi-family housing begins around $199,000 for two units and reaches $675,000 for ten units. Single-family housing will sometimes consist of Colonial Revival twin homes, but Barry Square does also have Cape Cods, bungalows and Dutch Colonial homes beginning around $145,000 and reaching $360,000. There are also some condos available between $105,000 and $160,000. Homes tend to be closer together, with driveways on the side of the home leading to backyard garages. Some homes will have converted rooms out of second-story balconies, while other homes may have built out the attic to include more space. Front porches, both enclosed and unenclosed (as well as a few wrap-around), are common for multi-family homes, and trees in all stages of growth are found throughout the neighborhood.
Three family houses are a dominant presence in Barry Square.

Corner markets and restaurants throughout
Here, little may be the best word to describe the stores and restaurants scattered throughout the neighborhood. “We have a great little supermarket that is a great resource for us,” says Yennie. “There are little restaurants and a little ice cream place where people can go and sit together.” With no specific commercial area, Barry Square is dotted with corner markets and places to eat. A section of Trinity College is working to become the home to food trucks for college students and residents alike. The Koeppel Community Sports Center, an ice hockey rink for Trinity College, plans to be the home for the food trucks.

General Griffen A. Stedman stands as a reminder that before it became Barry Square, the Campfield area was where many Civil War troops mustered.
Greenspace outside the church and golf to the south
St. Augustine Church, at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Campfield Avenue, has a few green spaces around it that include a little free library and spots to contemplate nature with a short path. Four streets south of the neighborhood is Goodwin Park, a 237-acre park with spots for tennis, basketball and a playground for children. At the Goodwin Park Golf Course, beginner golfers can start on the 9 hole North Course before taking to the 18 hole Championship Course. With three ponds within the park, fishing is allowed, but residents can’t fish where they may be affected by golfers.
A high school under renovation
Children can begin school at Michael D. Fox Elementary for kindergarten through fifth grade before moving to Alfred E. Burr Middle for sixth through eighth grade. The Bulkeley High School building is currently under renovation, so ninth and tenth grades attend a temporary south campus, while the eleventh and twelfth grades attend a temporary north campus. Bulkeley is expected to re-open in the fall of 2025. All three schools receive a C-minus from Niche.

Bringing people together with clean-up days
“There are community day events for the people,” says Yennie. “We are trying to bring people together so they know who their neighbors are.” Two times a year Barry Square has a community clean-up, with residents, community police and fire departments, students from Trinity College and even folks from the probate court all assisting in the clean-up. National Night Out, meant to foster relationships between communities and local police officers, is held at Goodwin Park in August.
