North End

Affordable single and multi-family homes
"The North End has a lot of multi-family houses. I would say about 90% are multi-family, so the density is high, and that's one of the biggest downsides of living there," Cousins says. Ranch-style homes built in the 1940s and 50s sell for between $150,000 and $215,000. Assessors value the neighborhood's four-to-eight-bedroom multi-family houses at between $290,000 and $400,000. Most of the multi-family houses were built in the early 20th century. A redevelopment project is currently underway on Main Street. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reported in December 2023 that it is the largest redevelopment project in the North End of Hartford in over 25 years. The $36 million project will bring 160 new houses and is expected to be completed within the next two years. In 2021, the Brackett Knoll subdivision added 14 income-restricted, two-family dwellings.Moderately rated public schools
Children often begin their educations at S.A.N.D. Elementary School, which has an 11-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a C-minus Niche rating. Milner Middle School is within walking distance of many residences. It has a 3/10 on GreatSchools. Teens often move on to Thomas Snell Weaver High School, which has a 13-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a C Niche rating. The Weaver Journalism & Media Communications Pathway trains students for jobs in media fields, including radio, television, print and online journalism and more. The nearby Achievement First Hartford Academy, a charter school, has a B Niche rating and serves kindergarten through 12th-grade students.Greenspaces within walking distance
The 693-acre Keney Park makes up much of the neighborhood's western portion. The park has miles of paved walking paths shaded by old oaks. The park also has an 18-hole golf course, a disc golf course and a cricket field. Residents can walk to the Parker Memorial Community Center, which includes basketball and volleyball courts, a pool, game rooms, a kitchen and exercise equipment. Directly to the neighborhood's northeast, Windsor Meadows State Park provides wooded space for locals to picnic, bike, hike and fish along the Connecticut River.
Local restaurants and mom-and-pop businesses
Many residents start their days with bacon and eggs at Sister's Breakfast & Lunch on Main Street. Dunn's River Jamaican Restaurant serves authentic Caribbean dishes like curry shrimp pasta and pepper steak. Chef Walt's on Garden Street is popular for its ground beef burgers and salmon stir fry. Tee's Boutique on Main Street sells casual women's clothing. People shop for items like cabinets and windows at STAR Hardware. Multiple car dealerships, such as Hartford Toyota and Liberty Honda, are to the neighborhood's east. Most businesses line Albany Avenue. These include ShanLoren Hair Braiding, Aquarius Music & Accessories and Brighter Day Grocery. Folks often walk to buy groceries at D&D Supermarket on Garden Street.
A local festival and professional entertainment
Locals come together annually at Hartford's riverfront for The Taste of the Caribbean & Jerk Festival. The festival encourages visitors to celebrate and learn about the cultures of the English, Spanish, French and Indo-Caribbean islands while consuming their cuisines and listening to their music. People watch minor league baseball games at Dunkin' Park, 1 ½ miles south. Children participate in educational workshops at The Children's Museum, about 5 miles west. The University of Hartford's performing arts conservatory, the Hartt School, holds plays at the campus' Lincoln Theater. North End is a short trip from the Xfinity Theatre, a 30,000-person-capacity venue that hosts musicians like 21 Savage, Hank Williams Jr. and Janet Jackson. Residents watch film releases at Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas on Center Point Way. People can travel 3 miles southwest to the Mark Twain House & Museum to see the American High Gothic-style home where Samuel Langhorne Clemens composed many of his classic novels. The Caribbean American Society of Hartford promotes and organizes cultural events and receptions throughout the year.
Getting around Hartford
The city operates bus stops throughout the neighborhood, including on Hampton Street, Barbour Street and Charlotte Street. People travel 2 miles south via Barbour Street and Main Street to Downtown Hartford. Bradley International Airport is 14 miles south via Interstate 91.Crime and improvements
According to the CAP Index, the North End has a 10/10 homicide rating. The ratings for robbery, sexual assault and assault with a weapon are 9/10. The North End's overall crime score is 7/10, compared to a 4/10 national average. In recent years, the city has placed more attention on the area. "The city has planted trees and repaved sidewalks and spent a lot of money beautifying along Albany, which has increased interest in the area," Cousins says. "They also built a library, tore down some non-livable buildings and put pressure on the landlords to beautify properties." He added that Dunkin' Park has brought more traffic and business to Albany Avenue.
