20 miles of trails at Duke Farms

In the north end of the city, Duke Farms is a massive 2,700-acre nature preserve with 20 miles of trails winding through forest and floodplains, past a waterfall and around the park’s lakes. Other features include an indoor Orchid Range, an educational center and a cafe. Duke Farms also has a community garden that’s donated over 43,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food banks since 2015.

In the south end of Hillsborough, the 6,300-acre Sourland Mountain Preserve has a trail network that covers over 8 miles of woodlands. The preserve is also a popular mountain biking and horseback riding destination. Closer to home, Ann Van Middlesworth Park has baseball fields, basketball courts, a skate park and a fishing pond. Golfers have several courses in the area, including Royce Brook Golf Club, Spooky Brook Public Golf Course and Mattawang Golf Club.

Public bus lines, train station in Somerville

Somerset County offers three public bus lines throughout the area. Just north of Hillsborough in Somerville, there’s a train station with a line that runs from High Bridge to Penn Station in Manhattan. Commuters can take U.S. Route 206 north to get to Somerville’s train station and south to Trenton. Trenton-Mercer is a domestic airport less than 20 miles south and Newark Liberty International Airport is 25 miles north. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is the nearest hospital, about 5 miles north in Somerville.

According to FBI data from 2022 to 2023, reported violent crime decreased by 19%, and reported property crime increased by 85%. Overall crime rates are below the state and national average.

Shopping local, Rotary Fair in August

Hillsborough Promenade is one of the city’s largest shopping centers, offering Weis Markets, Lowe’s Home Improvement and department stores. Along Route 206, there are more grocery stores and plenty of chain restaurants. Residents can also find farm-fresh produce at the Hillsboro Farm Country Market, which is open seasonally from April to December. The city has a wide range of local restaurants, serving everything from American and Middle Eastern favorites to sub sandwiches and authentic Indian dishes.

Every August, the city holds the annual Rotary Fair and Business Expo at the Hillsborough Promenade. The shopping center is transformed into a carnival with a neon-lit midway, amusement rides, local vendors and food trucks. The five-day event features live entertainment every night and a fireworks display on the final night.
