Montello Park
Neighborhood in Holland, Michigan
Allegan County 49423
From worker's cottages to luxury lakeside properties
After the Heinz factory opened in 1897, the neighborhoods around it had to grow to meet the demand for its workforce. Homes were built small and tightly spaced, using classic early 1900s designs like ranch styles, bungalows, and Cape Cods. Properties in Montello Park typically range from $200,000 to $450,000, depending on size and renovations. Many are 1,000 square feet or less. “There’s a different feel than the rest of Holland. Most streets have no curbs, and the homes are a little smaller,” Norris says. “When we asked residents door-to-door, the number one thing they valued about their neighborhood was that it was quiet.”Along the lakeshore, it feels like an entirely different neighborhood. Waterside properties are often newer construction, with sprawling floor plans and private docks. Prices can range from $1 million to $4.5 million. “In general, this neighborhood is a more affordable pocket,” says Tantzi Habsburg, an associate broker with Re/Max Lakeshore and Holland resident. “But any home on the water is not going to go for anything under $1 million.” Homes along the lakeshore have a slight risk of flooding and may require special insurance.
Take a walkway over to Kollen Park
Kollen Park rests along Lake Macatawa and offers lakeside views, a large playground and boat launches. In the summer, it gets busy for a live music concert series. The Heinz Waterfront Walkway connects this waterside green space with Montello Park. “The walking trail runs right through the neighborhood’s business district, so you can cut over to Kollen Park after picking up your food,” Norris says.DeGraaf Nature Center is an 18-acre preserve with outdoor trails along the western edge of Montello Park. When it snows, the center offers snowshoe rentals, and visitors can cross-country ski. The nature center is undergoing renovations to add updated parking and a new firepit area. It is expected to reopen in early 2025 and will continue to offer a range of educational and crafty events in its indoor facilities.
Early drop off at West Elementary
Holland Public Schools’ West Elementary is within walking distance of many homes. West gets a B-plus rating from Niche and is known for its Books & Games Before School Program. This hour of playtime and homework help is free for all students, and kids are provided breakfast. Holland Middle gets a B-minus from Niche, while Holland High scores a B-plus. Holland High borders the neighborhood's east side, less than a mile away from many houses.Montello Park is also home to Calvary Schools of Holland, a private, faith-based school for kindergarten through 12th grade. Niche gives the school a B and rates it as the third-best private K-12 school in the Grand Rapids area. The school is small, with under 200 students.
Building community in Montello Park
The local non-profit 3Sixty is working in Montello Park to increase neighborhood engagement, and they are just getting started. “We had our first neighborhood clean-up in 2024 and plan on making that a reoccurring event,” Norris says. “And will continue to mobilize people with courses on how to be neighborhood leaders. We are still in the early stages.” 3Sixty's work in other Holland neighborhoods has seen the introduction of new murals and long-standing community events.Residents of Montello Park also engage in the community at local houses of worship, like My Father’s House Church, where services are given in both English and Spanish. Christ Memorial Reformed Church offers a variety of community events, including youth groups, game nights and Wednesday night dinners.
MAX Transit connects to downtown and the hospital
Montello Park is about 2 miles from the heart of downtown Holland. It’s a mile from Holland Hospital, and the closest major grocery store is Family Fare Supermarket, 2 miles south. MAX Transit buses offer routes to all three of those locations. The closest major city is Grand Rapids, accessible via Interstate 196. The interstate is on the other side of the city, so Montello Park residents have a slightly longer drive than elsewhere in Holland. The 31-mile trip typically takes about 40 minutes. Grand Rapids is home to the Gerald R. Ford Airport.A popular Dutch bakery and expanding brewery
The neighborhood's north side is home to the Southshore Village Business District. Locals have easy access to Margarita's authentic Mexican cuisine, DeBoer Bakkerij's breakfast sandwiches and Dutch pastries, and Doebs Pizzeria’s Detroit-style pies. There’s also a Dollar General for picking up essentials. “The business district is a big amenity for the neighborhood, and there’s some new development on the way,” Norris says. The popular DeBoer Bakkerij purchased another location in the same shopping district and is expected to open a full-service restaurant in 2025. Tulip City Brewstillery is remodeling and will also reopen in 2025 as Tulip City Bar and Grill. The brewstillery’s Mexican-fusion food truck, Spice Boys, will now have a permanent home in the restaurant’s new kitchen.
