Residents come first in Holland

Holland, known as Springfield Township, is a suburb of Toledo where residents’ needs come first. “We have multiple different, affordable residential housing areas, our school district is one of the finest and our cost of living is relatively affordable,” says Michael Hampton, the township administrator and longtime resident of Springfield Township. The township can count on public services for snow and ice control, road maintenance, leaf pickup and other pertinent community needs. Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport flies to Arizona and Florida for out-of-state travel. Springfield Township is meticulously planned on a grid system, with houses lining every sidewalk and lane. The suburban township has several well-maintained parks, meeting places, play structures, sports fields and community events.

Friendly housing prices with rolling lawns

Home styles vary from two-story flat-faced Colonials to mid-century modern villas with front-facing garages. Single-family homes range from $100,000 to $400,000. Condos and co-ops can go for around $300,000 to $530,000. Near the Stone Oak Country Club, homes are $500,000 to $600,000.

Community Homecoming Park and Strawberry Acres Park

The Community Homecoming Park is a notable green space in the area and has four baseball fields, five soccer fields and four rental options. This park is used for community events such as the Holland Strawberry Festival and the annual Freedom Celebration. Have a picnic at Strawberry Acres Park, which is equipped with public picnic tables and outside grilling stations. Or pick up a game of pickleball at one of the nearby courts. Children can play on the two play structures available. Events are hosted in The Lodge, a 2,600-square-foot brick-accented building that hosts receptions, corporate sessions and other events. An 18-hole golf course surrounds the Stone Oak Country Club, which offers varying membership categories suited to different interests, such as golf, fitness, social or dining.

Firenation Glass and MacQueen's Orchards

Shopping and dining are in Spring Meadows Place, featuring popular chains such as Best Buy and Sam’s Club. Local favorites, such as the recently renovated firefighter-themed Fire Station Bar and Grill, are nearby. Visit Harvest for an award-winning sandwich or a craft beer. At MacQueen Orchards, visitors can pick apples from mid-September to the end of October. Locals get crafty at Firenation Glass Studio and Gallery, which offers lessons in glass blowing. Nominated as the Best Place to Buy Local Art, Copper Moon Studio sells local artwork and teaches residents to fuse glass.

Bus stops and I-475

Springfield Township is bisected by Airport Highway and bordered by I-475. While most residents rely on their vehicles to get around, the township has access to public modes of transportation. The Toledo bus system has extended services into Springfield Township with new route 33. Through the public transportation system, residents can call a ride for an affordable rate with TARTA Flex. However, walking and biking are still options to get around. “We are continually improving our pedestrian and bicycle paths, so there’s always an opportunity for folks that want to walk or bike,” says Hampton. “We’re trying to make it more accessible for them to do so.”

Strawberry Festival

To celebrate the area’s strawberry harvest, the residents of Springfield Township throw an annual Strawberry Festival in the summer. The festival spans three days and has a turnout of around 15,000 to 20,000 people each year. Fresh strawberry pies, milkshakes and other treats are sold. The event culminates in a parade and a bake-off, where the top three winners will receive a prize.
