Downtown Houma
Neighborhood in Houma, Louisiana
Terrebonne Parish 70360
Cozy cottages and renovated historic bungalows
Sidewalks connect the residential streets in downtown Houma, making this one of the city’s more pedestrian-friendly areas. Residential homes make up just a third of the property mix and cluster together on lots measuring under a quarter acre. Some date to the first half of the 20th century, while others were built in the 1950s or ’60s. Most properties include enough driveway space for a single vehicle, but cars are often parked along the streets. Cottages and shotgun-style homes with narrow front porches are standard, fetching prices from $150,000 to $250,000. Renovated historic bungalows might cost $700,000 to $800,000.Launching from Downtown Marina
Three blocks south of Terrebonne General, Shady Oak Park sits tucked within a grove of billowing trees. Ample parking is available at the corner of Wood and Center Streets behind the Houma Municipal Auditorium. At the confluence of Bayou Terrebonne and the Intracoastal Waterway, the Downtown Marina serves Houma residents and recreational boaters with water access, sculptures and a playground to amuse the kids. The marina hosts a popular farmers market on the first Saturday of every month. Local actors put their talents on display at Le Petit Theatre de Terrebonne, a small performing arts theater that hosts four plays and a musical every season.Starting out at Southdown Elementary
Kids attend schools located about a mile from the downtown area. The first is Southdown Elementary School, which receives a B from Niche. Then comes Houma Junior High School, which earns a B-plus. Terrebonne High School also receives a B-plus. Downtown Houma is also home to two private academic institutions, St. Francis De Sales Cathedral School and St. Matthew’s Episcopal School, both unrated by Niche.Muumuus at the Maw Maw Walker Stroll
Downtown Houma hosts events inviting neighbors to gather on Main Street to celebrate local culture and heritage. Houma’s Mardi Gras celebration is one of the largest in Louisiana, featuring colorful parades, marching bands, King Cake and beads galore. In March, Bayou Terrebonne Boucherie features a pork barbecue, live music and a white bean cookoff. Locally made art takes center stage during the White Boot Stroll, a block party held on the last Saturday in May. October’s Maw Maw Walker Stroll is a costume contest in the spirit of the Red Dress Run in New Orleans, with entrants dressed in muumuus. The Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade and Festival is another fun family-friendly event featuring pups dressed in their scariest or silliest costumes.Highway 182 to New Orleans
From West Main Street near the hospital, it’s easy to hop on Louisiana Highway 182, also known as New Orleans Boulevard, which connects to U.S. Route 90 for the 45-mile trip to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport or the 60-mile journey into New Orleans. Highway 24 runs parallel to Bayou Terrebonne and provides the best route to Thibodaux, 18 miles north. The Bus Transfer Terminal for the Good Earth Transit system sits at the corner of West Main Street and Barataria Avenue, allowing riders to access multiple destinations throughout the Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux metropolitan area.Bayou Terrebonne Distillers and craft beer
Days begin with coffee and powdered beignets from Downtown Jeaux, egg sandwiches at New York Bagel Houma of Cinn of a Biscuits from the Buttery Crumb. A selection of salads, sandwiches and burgers make 531 Liberty Café an enticing lunch spot. At Spigots Brew Pub on Barrow Street, a rotating list of seasonal brews accompanies the roster of craft beers on tap. Around the corner, warm earth-and-jewel tones welcome diners to Cristiano Ristorante, an Italian eatery specializing in house-made pasta and chargrilled steaks. Lumiere Blues & Jazz Bistro offers waterside seating, an eclectic menu and live music. Folks can stop by Bayou Terrebonne Distillers on West Main Street for bottles of Good Earth Straight Bourbon or Hard Scrabble Silver Rum. Lafayette Grocery is conveniently located just outside the downtown area, and the Walmart Supercenter off West Tunnel Boulevard offers a bigger selection.Houma’s hurricane risk
When Hurricane Ida struck in 2021, it demolished large swaths of coastal Louisiana, including parts of downtown Houma. “We took a hard hit for Ida,” Picou says. “We had some areas that had to be demolished because only half the building was there.” The risk of flooding and wind damage is severe, particularly during the hurricane season from June through November.
