Building a brighter future in Downtown Houma
As the seat of Terrebonne Parish, Houma is home to about 30,000 people. Its downtown area features a colorful main street with eclectic restaurants offering a dose of Cajun culture. West Main Street runs parallel to Bayou Terrebonne, serving as downtown’s main artery while pumping energy into the network of cafés and bistros. Terrebonne General Health System, Houma’s biggest hospital, presides over the neighborhood, bordered by the bayou and the Intracoastal Waterway. Though Hurricane Ida ravaged parts of the city in 2021, downtown Houma retains the hallmark joie de vivre of Cajun culture. “We have a good little gumbo starting in the downtown area,” says Anne Picou, cultural enrichment administrator for Terrebonne Parish Government’s Quality of Life branch.

Some date to the first half of the 20th century, while others were built in the 1950s or ’60s. Most properties include enough driveway space for a single vehicle, but cars are often parked along the streets. Cottages and shotgun-style homes with narrow front porches are standard, fetching prices from $150,000 to $250,000. Renovated historic bungalows might cost $700,000 to $800,000.

Houma’s hurricane risk
When Hurricane Ida struck in 2021, it demolished large swaths of coastal Louisiana, including parts of downtown Houma. “We took a hard hit for Ida,” Picou says. “We had some areas that had to be demolished because only half the building was there.” The risk of flooding and wind damage is severe, particularly during the hurricane season from June through November.
