Families flock to Summerfield Place
Family is the draw for Summerfield Place, a neighborhood just a few miles southwest of downtown Houma. "It's truly family-oriented; the houses have a lot of space, and it's in an area with A-rated schools," says Realtor Shanisha Fletcher with eXp Realty. "A lot of families move into the community because of the amount of offshore oil rig jobs here." In addition to the quiet, residential feel, families find parks within walking distance and schools just around the block. While the family-friendly vibe is the main draw, Summerfield Place is still desirable for buyers in general, providing space to grow and proximity to downtown dining and entertainment.
Classic suburban residences outside major flood zones
This suburban subdivision features classic paved sidewalks and tidy yards decorated with flowering mulberry and towering pine trees. Most homes were built in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and many are renovated before going on the market. There is occasionally a small inventory of new construction or lots available. Residences are primarily ranch-style or New Traditional with neoclassical or Cape Cod-inspired exteriors. List prices typically range between $255,000 and $450,000, depending on the updates performed. New construction usually lists between $550,000 and $975,000. Summerfield Place is susceptible to flooding, but "the neighborhood is at a higher elevation, so most homes aren't in a heavy flood zone, save the street closest to Bayou Black," Fletcher says. Residents must purchase private flood and home insurance or enroll in the National Flood Insurance Program, though high deductibles have recently caused residents difficulty.

While kids enjoy the playground, parents can relax at picnic tables shaded by oak trees. The park also features a popular nine-hole disc golf course. Several other green spaces are available across the community, like Mulberry Park and Willard Avenue Park, which both offer a play area and walking loop. A few miles west of Bayou Black, the Bayou Black Recreation Center offers a fitness area, pool, sports courts and a play area. It's close to several trails that wind through the marshes and grasslands surrounding Houma, like Mandalay Nature Trail.
The community is less that 15 miles from amenities and events
Amenities are close to Summerfield Place residents. On St. Charles Street, there's a Rouses Market and restaurants like Off the Hook, a local seafood chain. PJs Coffee is another favorite for brunch dishes, pastries and coffee drinks. According to Fletcher, "There are a lot of great restaurants and community events downtown, and the neighborhood is only about 5 miles away." Nearby, West Tunnel Boulevard turns into Martin Luther King Boulevard, where Houma's main retail area is. There are grocery and big box stores like Publix, Walmart, Sam's Club and Target. There are also many chain restaurants, supply shops and salons here. Southland Mall is just a few miles north, offering department stores, clothing outposts, restaurants and a movie theater.
