Nature and retail wrap around the community of Winston Park
Winston Park is one of Howell Township’s established suburbs clustered around the intersection of U.S. Route 9 and Interstate 195. Like the Land of Pines neighborhood next door, it’s merely a mile wide, making it a compact community. “Neighborhoods in this part of Howell are primarily residential,” says Louisa Sagarese, sales associate with Re/Max Revolution. There’s not much room to develop more housing, especially with Aldrich Lake stretching across the west end. Street names reference Howell’s natural environment. Stretches like Oakwood Drive and Hidden Valley Court feature cul-de-sacs, keeping traffic contained to bigger commercial thoroughfares. But it’s not exactly a sleepy suburb. There are parks within walking distance, in addition to abundant shopping along Route 9.
Colonial and ranch-style homes on larger lots
Despite the compact size of the neighborhood overall, people like the option of buying more space here. “You can find a home with an acre-sized lot,” says Viviana Meija, a Realtor with Keller Williams. Colonial-influenced homes are a popular style, especially for homebuyers who prefer those larger lots. But as Meija notes, prices for such styles in Howell have been on the rise in recent years. They range from $575,000 to $800,000. But there are plenty of ranch-style homes in the $430,000 to $550,000 range. Even these come with comparatively large lots, with most being over a third of an acre. The majority homes are surrounded by tall trees and feature a driveway leading to an attached garage.

Magnet programs make Howell High stand out
Residents have access to the Howell Township Public School District, which is B-rated overall by Niche. The youngest students can start at Land of Pines School, which covers prekindergarten through second grade and gets a B-plus. Newbury School teaches third to fifth grade, and Howell Middle School North is where sixth to eighth grade students attend. Both schools receive a B. Howell High is recognized for its Humanities Learning Center, which has a magnet program in the performing arts and humanities. The school is rated A-minus.

Namesake Winston Park has open spaces bordered by homes
Howell Township installed a new dock at Aldrich Lake in 2018. The lake was also dredged, completing a project that was 20 years in the making. During the dredging, nearly 1,000 fish were moved to Manasquan Reservoir, but the lake has since been restocked. The reservoir also serves as a park and is especially popular for its trails, which take hikers past local flora and fauna. The Cove Trail in particular takes visitors into wetland ecosystems, thanks to bridges and boardwalks. “The Monmouth County Park system is unreal,” says Allie Farinhas, a broker and associate realtor at Re/Max Innovation. Winston Park’s namesake green space is crossed by Toad Creek, giving it a touch of nature as well. But for the most part, it offers a traditional park experience with a playground, basketball court and baseball field. There are benches and picnic tables for lounging. Swaths of grass are bordered by trees or the backyards of residents.

Shopping and dining along state Route 9
The benefit of Route 9 is that it allows residents to explore both major retailers and small locally owned businesses. A lot of retail is clustered in or around shopping centers, such as Aldrich Plaza, which shares the same name as the neighborhood’s lake. Residents will find Shop Rite and CVS near the plaza, but also cozy businesses like Nathan’s Big City Bagels. Howell Plaza Shopping Center brings an innovative eatery with Poke Burritos, where seafood is put in a sandwich wrap. For a roadside diner experience, Stewart’s Root Beer offers Americana classics like root beer floats and chili dogs.

Commuting to NYC on I-195
Besides being a retail strip, Route 9 is also a main artery for driving around Howell. Conveniently, it meets with Interstate 195 at the northeastern side of the neighborhood. Commuters can complete the 70-mile drive into New York City in about 90 minutes. For the most part, this is a car dependent neighborhood, but the 139 Bus on Route 9 does offer one public transportation option, dropping commuters off at the Port Authority in Manhattan.
