Eagledale offers a little something for everyone

Eagledale is a large neighborhood on the west side of Indianapolis characterized by a relatively affordable mix of established homes and easy access to amenities and attractions. The community is home to a variety of schools, both public and private, and it is adjacent to Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Established homes with attractive price points

The neighborhood’s housing stock ranges from small, older homes to traditional midcentury homes. Many of the older homes have detached garages in the backyard, while ranches and bi-levels typically offer attached garages and more spacious lots. “Because the homes are more established, it gives [the neighborhood] a suburban feel,” says Lori Davis Smith of Highgarden Real Estate, who has sold several homes in Eagledale and lives in nearby Eagle Creek. Bungalows and Tudors stand out among the diverse architectural styles of the oldest homes, many of which have been renovated. Home prices typically range from around $80,000 to the high $200,000s, but more than 60 percent of residents rent their properties. “It’s affordable for local investors, who buy homes, fix them up and rent them,” Smith says. Multifamily options include older condos and newly built townhomes. Prices range from under $100,000 to the high $200,000s, with HOA fees ranging from under $30 to the high $100s.
The neighborhood’s median sales price is in the high $100,000s. How that compares to neighboring communities: Haughville
is in the low $100,000s; Marian Cold Springs is in the low $200,000s; and Speedway , an excluded city, is in the high $200,000s. The overall Indianapolis median is in the mid-$200,000s. “If you’re a first-time homebuyer, it’s a great area to buy,” Smith says of Eagledale.

Public and private school options in the community

The neighborhood is served by Indianapolis Public Schools. Young students in the district can attend any of the elementary and middle schools in their respective enrollment zones. There are four such schools in Eagledale alone. They are:

  • Ernie Pyle School 90, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade
  • Carl Wilde School 79, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade
  • Clarence Farrington School 61, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade
  • Indiana Math and Science Academy West, kindergarten through eighth grade
If residents prefer to send their children to private school, they are in luck. Also in the neighborhood are:
  • Cardinal Ritter High School, one of the highest-rated high schools in the state
  • St. Michael-St. Gabriel Elementary School, a feeder school next to Cardinal Ritter High

It’s all about racing when you live on the west side

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the home of the most famous race in America. The Indianapolis 500 is held on the Sunday before Memorial Day every year, but the communities surrounding it get revved up much earlier. “During the month of May, that whole side of town is checkered flags and team flags,” says Brad Polston of Highgarden Real Estate, who sells real estate throughout the Indianapolis area. “[Residents] take a lot of pride in the race, so they're very expressive about it.” The Checkered Flag Railway Bridge on 16th Street entering Eagledale is a reminder of what racing means to the city’s west side.

Easy access to downtown and surrounding interstates

Downtown Indianapolis is within 15 minutes of the neighborhood. Interstate 65 provides the most convenient route from the north side, while residents on the south side can hop on 16th Street for the quick commute into the heart of the city. Downtown can also be reached via bus. It typically takes 20 to 25 minutes to drive to Indianapolis International Airport, which can be reached via nearby Interstates 70 and 465. “It’s centrally located to the interstates, and congestion is not nearly as bad as it is on the other sides of town,” Smith says.

Riverside Regional Park, Eagle Creek Park offer recreational options

James Foster Gaines Park and Moreland Park are neighborhood green spaces with playgrounds and athletic courts and fields. Residents on the east side can take advantage of being close to the White River by visiting nearby Riverside Regional Park, which offers everything from trails and a playground to a BMX park and a velodrome. Residents on the east side enjoy quick access to Eagle Creek Park. The city’s largest park is anchored by a reservoir and includes nearly 4,000 acres of forest land. Unique amenities include an Earth Discovery Center that offers nature programs and an Ornithology Center that features live birds of prey. “Eagles were literally repopulated based on the conservation efforts there,” Smith says. Golfers can try their luck at Brickyard Crossing, a public course with four holes inside the oval of Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
As for shopping and dining, Saraga International Grocery is a convenient neighborhood option on Lafayette Road. Che Chori is a popular Argentinian eatery in the community. Meijer offers one-stop shopping just outside of the neighborhood north of 38th Street, and nearby is the International Marketplace, a diverse commercial district known for its global dining options. Speedway offers additional shopping and dining options in its popular downtown district.
