Hillcrest Oaks offers a quiet residential setting with easy access to the Metroplex
The Irving community of Hillcrest Oaks, located about 12 miles from downtown Dallas, is relatively secluded neighborhood that borders the Arts District while also offering easy access to the attractions and amenities of the nearby Metroplex. “It’s an ideal location for anyone needing access to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metro area in an established neighborhood with a suburban feel,” says Casey Smith of Texcel Real Estate. Smith says she lives nearby because south Irving is less crowded than other parts of the city. “It’s nice to be in a quieter space away from the development.”
An established neighborhood where families are raised
The community features a collection of midcentury ranch-style homes built in the 1960s. Mature oaks and other native greenery shade sidewalks and front spacious yards in this attractive, walkable setting. “It’s one of the more established neighborhoods,” Smith says. “There are not a lot of rentals. It’s a lot of people who have lived there for a long time and raised their kids.” Smith describes the homes as “well-built and well-maintained.” With Texas winters and electric bills in mind, many homes are designed with brick and stone. Backyards are large enough for pools, which provide a convenient respite from the hot, humid Texas summers. Prices typically range from the low $300,000s to the mid-$400,000s.
Nearby Irving Arts Center is a city attraction
The Irving Arts Center is the cultural anchor of the neighboring Arts District. Residents are mere minutes from the Smithsonian-affiliated facility that is the featured attraction of a 10-acre complex. The center is home to a sculpture garden, rotating exhibits and a theater that hosts events throughout the year. Free guided tours are available the first Saturday of every month. The center also caters much of its programming to children and offers summer art camps for area youth.
Shopping and dining along Texas 183; top restaurants at Las Colinas
The Target-anchored Irving Town Centre and the adjacent Irving Mall are featured commercial destinations along the Texas 183 commercial corridor. Joe’s Coffee Shop and Di Rosani’s are staples of the Downtown Heritage District, which is currently being renovated to ease car traffic and increase walkability. Also nearby is the Las Colinas Entertainment District. Irving’s trendy hot spot is filled with dining and entertainment destinations on Lake Carolyn. “We have a lot of taquerias and family-owned staples in the area, but the best restaurants are in Las Colinas,” Smith says.
Nearby recreation center offers a pool, other amenities
The Lee Park Recreation Center is less than a mile away. The facility is home to a popular pool, and other featured amenities include a gymnasium, fitness center and racquetball courts. Kids can enjoy an adjacent shaded playground. Jaycee Park is a relaxing green space just across the highway. Its featured attraction is a large pond with a hippo sculpture where visitors can feed ducks. However, activity is limited when water levels are low. Nearby Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas offers additional activities for outdoors enthusiasts.
Elementary, middle schools located in the neighboring community
Younger students can attend Brandenburg Elementary School, rated C-plus by Niche, and Travis Middle School, rated B-minus. Both are conveniently located in the neighboring Arts District neighborhood. McArthur High School, which is also close by, earns a B-plus from Niche. The B-rated Irving Independent School District offers Career and Technical Education programs that begin in seventh grade. Wesleyan Academe is a Christian private school in the neighborhood serving students in kindergarten through third grade.
Texas 183 connects residents to two airports, I-35
Texas 183, known locally as West Airport Freeway, provides a direct route to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport just 6 miles west of the neighborhood. The freeway also provides access to Love Field, a smaller commercial airport about 9 miles away. To the east, the freeway connects to Interstate 35. Downtown Dallas is 13 miles away via I-35. Closer to home, DART buses serve the community. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Irving is just across the freeway. “That’s why it’s such a desirable location and prices are a little higher, because you can get to everything so quickly,” Smith says. “That’s a HUGE perk for traveling within the Metroplex.”
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
