An up-and-coming part of Jackson

Originally established nearly 100 years ago, River North is an urban neighborhood about 2 miles north of downtown Jackson. Of late, the neighborhood has seen increased interest. “It’s an up-and-coming neighborhood because a lot of old homes are getting refurbished,” says Mary Jane Whitson, a Realtor with Exit Realty who has been a long-time resident of the Jackson area. “This effort is increasing the home values, and that’s great for the neighborhood.” The neighborhood connects with a trail that leads to the edge of downtown to the south, where there's a burgeoning arts district.

Proximity to Lions Park and the Grand River

Lions Park is a large sports facility with baseball and softball fields and the Grand River flowing just behind its eastern edge. “The fields host Little League games in the summer,” Whitson says. In addition to a playground, basketball court and pavilion, the park also contains a pedestrian trail that goes over the river and leads south to the northern edge of downtown. The Grand River Arts Walk passes through the Armory Arts Apartments and Art 634, a haven for Jackson's art community to work on their craft. The trendy space, which features hardwood floors and brick walls, can be rented out for events such as weddings and corporate parties. The trail crosses North Street and goes through the former site of the Michigan State Prison, which opened in 1842 and closed in 2007. On North Street, close to the intersection with Cooper Street, a brick wall and a guard tower are still part of what used to be the prison. “They’ll never tear that down because that is historic,” Whitson says. Other recreation options include enjoying two water slides and a pool at the Nixon Water Park. Next door is a skate park open from spring through fall from dawn to dusk. About 3 and a half miles south is The Cascades, a man-made waterfall lit with LED lights during the summer.
