The oldest gated community in northeastern Florida
About 15 miles southeast of downtown Jacksonville, Deerwood is home to the area’s oldest gated community, anchored by the Deerwood Country Club. In 1960, long before modern developments and highways had reached the south side, the Skinner family designed Deerwood as a secluded escape from the city; today, it's still known for its quiet streetscapes dotted with palm trees and an expansive, professional-grade golf course. “Residents spend a lot of time inside the neighborhood as opposed to outside,” says Glen Morrison, a local real estate agent with Regatta REI and nearby resident of eight years.

From mid-century to modern homes
Although most of the homes here date from between the 1960s and 1980s, many were also built around the turn of the century. “It’s mostly single-family homes here, and many of them are quite large,” Morrison says. One-story French Colonial Revivals from the 1970s and '80s with prominent two-car garages can sell for $550,000, while four-bedroom ranch-style homes with brick facades sell for over $700,000. Multi-story, five-bedroom 1990s New Traditional-style homes with side-gabled roofs and arched doorways sit on large, vibrant grassy lots with winding driveways and covered backyard patios, often selling for upwards of $1.5 million. On the neighborhood’s northeast corner, some smaller gated communities and apartment complexes are unassociated with the Deerwood Country Club. In this area, newly-built New Traditional-style rowhouses with gabled roofs and fenced-in yards can sell for $500,000, while condos and townhouses with neutral-colored siding and attached one-car garages sell for around $250,000.

Pickleball and spa at Deerwood Country Club
Residents here have the option of becoming an equity member of Deerwood Country Club, which grants privileges including the ability to serve on boards and committees. Club amenities include a fitness center, twelve tennis courts, four pickleball courts, an on-site spa and a kid’s club. Their junior Olympic-sized pool is home to the award-winning Deerwood Torpedoes swim team. The country club is best known for its championship 18-hole, par 72 golf course, popular with professional golfers but also offers driving ranges and practice greens for beginners of all ages.
Exclusive events and larger celebrations
The country club hosts small gatherings for residents that include wine tastings, comedy nights and murder mystery parties. Larger annual events like their Independence Day Live Fireworks Celebration, Halloween Spooktacular and Gingerbread Workshop are also popular with locals.
Southern-style breakfast to start the day in Deerwood
Maple Street Biscuit Company is an easy breakfast favorite for Deerwood residents. Customers rave about the Food Network-featured squawking goat biscuit, starring fried chicken, goat cheese and pepper jelly. Other local eateries include The Loop Restaurant burgers and shakes or Urban Vietnamese for a warm bowl of ph?. Outside the community gates, locals can get groceries at Winn-Dixie or head to locally-owned Tony D’s for classic New York-style pizza and Italian food.
