Located in the San Marco region of Jacksonville is Englewood, a quiet residential community surrounded by bustling retail corridors. The neighborhood has many midcentury modern ranches made of concrete blocks, offering homeowners durable, weather-resistant options. You will see brick homes and modest-sized bungalows with simple lines.
The community is brimming with houses from the mid to late 1900s, but homebuyers can also expect a handful of 21st-century constructions. Contemporary styles from the last 10 years show simple ranch influences that blend seamlessly into the housing stock. Most homes in the area sell for $175,000 to $325,000. Residences over $300,000 tend to cluster near the eastern and western borders. "The area has many long-term homeowners, and several properties are passed down to the next generation," says Real Estate Professional Madelon Anne Walton-Reichenbach of Middleton Realty, Inc.
The community is home to Englewood Elementary School and the performing arts magnet school, Pine Forest Elementary. The magnet school earned a B on Niche. Sixth to eighth graders may participate in the Alfred Dupont Middle magnet programs, which offer dual language and International Business and Global Scholars options. Englewood High promises academic offerings such as Career Academies and the Early College Academy of Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering. Parents may also choose the neighborhood faith-based school, Christian Heritage Academy, open to young residents until the end of eighth grade.
To the north is Cuba Hunter Park, a neighborhood gathering spot with an onsite community center. The grounds include a paved walking path and a multi-use field often used for athletic pursuits. Skaters of any level enjoy the dedicated space with pipes, ramps and rails next to the recently updated playscapes. Heading south, you might run into Earl Johnson Memorial Park. The park is frequented by local anglers looking for treasures among the two fishing lakes. Sometimes, locals engage in Youth Soccer Club tournaments among the eight soccer fields.
As a part of the San Marco region of the city, this suburban community has easy access to several business and commercial districts. Central to the area is a plaza with a Walmart Supercenter. You will also see department stores and service providers along the commercial corridor of University Boulevard. This busy thoroughfare leads to the Santa Monica Shopping Center, where locals can shop for groceries at Harveys Supermarkets or Save A Lot. If you want locally grown produce and proteins, visit Freshfields Farm inside the red barn-style building. Residents can stay within the community to sample the eclectic flavors that the city has to offer. At the relaxed Sam Won Garden Korean BBQ, patrons can cook their bulgogi at the table or order favorites like dumplings and seafood pancakes. Beignets Caribbean Café serves comforting Caribbean-style staples like stewed chicken, oxtails, and fried plantains. Amar European Grocery Store sells freshly baked bread and a variety of products that are difficult to source stateside.
Walton-Reichenbach says that downtown is about 5 miles away, so the neighborhood attracts working professionals due to the excellent commute. Englewood contains an Interstate 95 interchange that provides convenient access to the rest of Jacksonville.
