Maple Hill is an escape from noise and crowds in Jacksonville
Outside Jacksonville city limits, Maple Hill offers a rural area with generational farms near the Camp Lejeune Marine base and Topsail Beach. While some families have been in the area since Maple Hill was settled, many residents come and go as part of their military service at Camp Lejeune. Jacksonville can be loud and busy. Maple Hill offers a quiet respite from all the activity, but still has easy access to highways that lead to downtown Jacksonville and Camp Lejeune.
Family farms sell fresh goods, from berries to yarn made from Alpaca fur. The Wooten family opens Bear Ridge Farms throughout the year so visitors can pick their own blueberries. “We grow pumpkins and flowers in the fall,” says Delean Wooten. “Our stand in Jacksonville is only open seasonally, but our store and farm in Maple Hill are open year-round.” The store stays stocked with vegetables, fruit and locally made products.
Single-family homes in a golf community or among farms
The western half of Maple Hill has farmland and ranch-style homes, while the eastern half is more residential with newer Craftsman homes. No matter where people live, the lots are large, giving residents plenty of yard space. Ranch-style homes have sold for $180,000 to $265,000, while Craftsmans can range from $265,000 to about $510,000. Many of Maple Hill’s subdivisions do not have homeowners associations or fees, but The Villas at Jackson Court and the Southwest Plantation golfing community do. Southwest Plantation also has community water and septic access, but most homes in Maple Hill run on septic tanks and well water systems.
Less than an hour to Camp Lejeune and the shore
Commuters use state Route 23 to drive almost 20 miles to downtown Jacksonville in about 25 minutes. The drive to Camp Lejeune is longer, about 37 miles for nearly 50 minutes. The Maple Hill Medical Center offers routine medical services, but the nearest hospital is the Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. American Airlines and Delta offer regional flights at Albert J. Ellis Airport, about 18 miles north of Maple Hill, but some travelers drive about 38 miles for almost an hour to fly out of Wilmington International Airport. Maple Hill’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Attending schools in Pender or Onslow counties
Maple Hill is split between Pender and Onslow counties, which means the community falls in two school districts. Students in Pender County attend C.F. Pope Elementary in Burgaw, which gets a B-minus from Niche. The school feeds into the C-rated Burgaw Middle and later the C-rated Pender High. Some students might apply to Pender Early College High, which gets an A. Students in Onslow County start out at Southwest Elementary, rated B-minus. Southwest Middle also earns a B-minus, while Southwest High gets a C-plus.
Events at the Maple Hill Community Center and surrounding communities
The Maple Hill Community Center neighbors the Maple Hill Presbyterian Church and hosts events like fish fry fundraisers and the annual Christmas dance. One of the biggest events in town is the Maple Hill Parade and Festival, where visitors shop from local vendors and see custom cars and motorcycles on display. Money raised during the event supports the Maple Hill Resource Center and its community programs. Residents might also visit Burgaw for the Blueberry Festival in June or Jacksonville for the Veterans Tribute Weekend in November.
The Holly Shelter Game Land has over 63,000 acres, often used by hunters, dog walkers and cyclists. Because the land has multiple uses, all visitors are encouraged to wear brightly colored clothing for best visibility. The nearby Bear Trail Golf Club offers tee times for the public and club members who want to play the 18-hole course. When residents want to relax by the shore, they drive 30 minutes to Surf City or Topsail Beach.
Shopping local and dining in Jacksonville
Due to Maple Hill’s rural setting, shopping is limited to Dollar General and the occasional small business, like MJ’s This & That clothing store. So when residents need groceries or want to dine out, they drive to Jacksonville. Restaurants in Jacksonville are diverse, from Thai dishes at The Old Siam to authentic meals at Marrakesh Mediterranean Cuisine. Highway 53 leads up to the Walmart Supercenter, and there’s an Aldi off Richlands Highway. While Jacksonville has popular seafood restaurants, some residents prefer to dine along the water at Sears Landing in Surf City.
Hurricanes have struck Maple Hill in the past
The community has experienced devastating floods in the past, particularly during Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Hurricane Debby in 2024 caused the Cape Fear River to rise and flood Highway 53. Some homes closer to the Northeast Cape Fear River may be in a flood zone, but roads often flood more than homes.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
