With hundreds of acres of rolling farmland designated as Agricultural Security Areas, Jefferson Township embraces its countryside setting in southeastern Butler County. The rural community is home to just over 5,200 people, and while the township has seen periods of new construction, ASAs preserve its verdant landscapes. Rustic homes and local businesses dot Jefferson Township’s meandering hills, and the neighboring borough of Saxonburg offers a quaint Main Street with more shopping, dining and community events. “It’s a nice town. There are stores and restaurants, and you can get your hair done there,” says Tammy Grassi, a real estate agent with Achieve Realty and a lifelong resident of southern Butler County. “It really is very walkable along the main strip.” With Pennsylvania Route 356 winding through the town’s northeastern corner, residents are also connected to the city center of Butler, less than 10 miles away.

Traditional farmhouses, newer construction and townhouse developments
Jefferson Township features a mix of established homes and newer construction. Rustic farmhouses date back to the early 20th century, while most ranch-style, Cape Cod and split-level homes were built throughout the mid-1900s. More recent builds include New Traditional homes and custom-built properties from the last two decades. While the median lot size is just over an acre, homebuyers can find country estates with up to several acres of land. Home prices typically range from $215,000 for smaller single-story homes to $400,000 for larger two-story properties, although custom builds tend to be more expensive and can fetch anywhere from $500,000 to $775,000. Just outside the borough of Saxonburg, there are several subdivisions with townhouses and condos selling for around $250,000 to $330,000. Jefferson Township has an overall CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score and significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Playground, pool and youth sports at Laura J. Doerr Park
Laura J. Doerr Memorial Park offers more than 80 acres of green space in the eastern half of town. It has a playground and various athletic facilities that are home to youth athletic leagues like Knoch Youth Baseball, the Saxonburg Area Girls Softball Association and the Knoch Area Soccer Association. The park’s SEBCO Pool features a water slide and is open seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Residents also have access to the Butler-Freeport Community Trail, which winds through the township’s northeastern corner and is accessible via a trailhead along Sheetz Drive. The entire trail system spans 21 miles between Butler and Freeport and follows the path of the former Western Pennsylvania Railroad. While it’s no longer a route for trains, the crushed limestone path is now a popular spot for walking, running and biking. Golfers can play a round at the public Saxon Golf Course, which is less than 6 miles away and has a separate 9-hole course and 18-hole course.
In Saxonburg, there’s the South Butler Community Library and the Saxonburg Museum. The museum documents the borough’s rich history, including its creation in 1831 by John Augustus Roebling. “Roebling is the original founder of the town. He invented the wire rope and designed the Brooklyn Bridge, so you can see a little Brooklyn Bridge model outside of the museum,” Grassi says.
