Outdoor spaces and interstate access are top draws for Jewett City
Jewett City is a borough within the town of Griswold, about 10 miles northeast of Norwich, Connecticut. Shaped by an industrial past that began when mills first harnessed the Pachaug River in the late 1700s, the area balances its heritage with easy access to outdoor recreation. State forests and nature preserves surround the borough, which includes several pocket parks and a walkable downtown district. Although local shops and restaurants keep daily essentials within reach, Interstate 395 is close by for convenient commutes to Norwich and other nearby towns.
Local parks and trails invite residents to get out and explore
Jewett City offers plenty of opportunities to get outside. Residents have access to the following green spaces:
- Veterans Memorial Park, with a walking track and benches with views of the Ashland Pond waterfall
- Jewett City Skate Park, featuring concrete stairs, bowls and ramps
- Jewett City Little League Field, which has a dedicated playground for little ones
A short drive away, Hopeville Pond State Park offers a campground, a boat launch and trails for walking and biking. The surrounding country roads are also suitable for recreational cycling, and the Burnham Tavern Trail is close by for more walks in the woods.

In the heart of the borough, you’ll find a broad assortment of single-family homes. Some Nationals and Colonial Revivals date to the mid-1800s, while many ranch-style and Cape Cod houses were built around a century later. The housing stock also includes duplexes and other multifamily properties, some of which were built within the past 25 years or so. “It’s catering to investors,” says Jason Pollard, team leader of the Wiehn Pollard Team at Compass Connecticut, who’s been in the real estate business since 2011. “It’s like a typical New England mill town with multifamily properties.” The median home sale price is around $365,000 — slightly high when compared with Norwich, where the median falls just under $300,000. Sale prices usually range from the mid-$100,000s to the upper $300,000s for single-family homes and the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$500,000s for whole multifamily units.
Griswold Public Schools serves students in the general area
Jewett City is part of Griswold Public Schools, which operates on a unified 70-acre campus where the elementary, middle and high school buildings are clustered together. Griswold High School receives a B from Niche and offers over 50 extracurricular activities, including an Esports team. Eligible students can earn credits from the University of Connecticut and Southern Connecticut State University through the high school’s dual enrollment programs. The high school also serves students from surrounding towns like Lisbon and Canterbury.
Commute times to nearby cities and health care services
The borough’s location is one of its strongest assets. “You’re right on that 395 corridor to go south, or north to Massachusetts,” Pollard says. While public transit is available through the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the area is largely car-dependent. It usually takes about 20 minutes to drive to Norwich, where you’ll find health care services and a 24-hour emergency department at The William W. Backus Hospital. If you commute farther south to the seaport cities of New London and Groton, expect your roughly 25-mile drive to take about half an hour. Foxwoods Resort Casino is another major area employer about 10 miles south of Jewett City, with a drive time of roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
Shops and local eateries are within walking distance of many homes
Most homes are within a mile of the downtown area, and many streets have sidewalks that give pedestrians easy access to its shops, restaurants and services. Popular local eateries include:

When you’d rather dine in, several grocery stores are a short drive away around I-395, including Aldi and Walmart. Closer to home, Jewett City Greenhouse has blooms to brighten up your table. Other local shops include Builders Surplus for home improvement goods and College Mart Flea Market, which sells antiques and collectibles from a former textile mill on Sundays.
