Up-and-coming suburb is a center for Joplin High football

Centrally located in Joplin, Blendville North is an up-and-coming Joplin neighborhood seeing lots of investments in housing, with support from city grants. "It's an older neighborhood that's turning over," says Shannon Chew, the Shannon Chew Real Estate Group leader with Keller Williams Elevate in Joplin. "A lot of the houses in this neighborhood are being bought and rehabbed or being torn down and a new one put in." On the north side, Junge Field is a focal point for this neighborhood and for the city, drawing Joplin High families for Friday night football games. Foot traffic and car traffic are typical in this neighborhood that's close to shops, restaurants, schools and neighborhood churches.

A blend of fixer-uppers and New Traditional homes

Blendville North is a walkable neighborhood, with sidewalk-lined streets arranged in a grid. The neighborhood blends older homes and new ones, with properties varying in style and condition. There are late-19th-century and early-20th-century styles such as cottages and bungalows, which may have stone facades and front porches. Often, they need a complete overhaul. "More experienced rehabbers will make major repairs," Chew says. "They'll put in a new roof, make repairs to the foundation, add new wiring and plumbing." There are also New Traditional homes built as recently as 2024. Small front yards are typically well maintained with the occasional lawn ornament or seasonal decoration. Homes can range between $75,000 and $200,000, depending on age and condition. Joplin aims to create homeownership opportunities for low and moderate-income families through the Homebuyers Assistance Program, open to qualifying applicants as long as funding is available or until early 2026.

The reconstruction included the Franklin Technology Center, which offers 14 career-prep pathways. Joplin High also has an accomplished athletics department, with a total of 10 state championship wins between all sports. In 2019, the football team won second place in the Class 6 division.

Friday night football at Junge Field a top community event

The sounds of marching bands and cheering crowds reverberate at Junge Field, home of Joplin High School Football. Families from across town pack the stands for Friday night varsity games. In late September, The Sanctuary of Joplin hosts a Fall Craft Fair and Car Show, with prizes for the best car, truck and motorcycle. The fall activities continue into October with the Harvest Party, featuring food, games and a trunk-or-treat for kids.

Original chili spaghetti at Fred and Red's

Blendville North offers a unique slice of Joplin's shopping and dining scene. Main Street borders the neighborhood to the east, lined with furniture and home supply stores, barber shops and salons, and popular local restaurants. Here, Zinc Coffee offers an upscale coffee experience, topping handcrafted lattes with milk foam art. First opening in 1923, Fred and Red's claims to be the originator of chili spaghetti, which the restaurant calls Spaghetti Red. Locals enjoy their chili from the bar for a classic diner experience. Main Street has a few places for second-hand finds, including Lil' Bits Thrift and Gift, stocked with clothes, jewelry and holiday decorations. Hall's is a convenience store on the neighborhood's south side, while Aldi and Walmart Neighborhood Market have grocery selections 1.5 miles south.

Main Street leads to downtown Joplin

Joplin's up-and-coming downtown is just over a mile south and offers increasing dining, art and event options. Main Street provides a convenient connection to the city center by car and by foot, thanks to crosswalks and wide sidewalks. However, Joplin is generally lacking in bike lanes and public transport, with the discontinuation of its trolley service. Metro Area Public Transit System provides rides on an appointment basis.
