Quiet Joplin suburb with new homes near city landmarks
Harmony Heights is a quiet south Joplin neighborhood centered between downtown Joplin, 2 miles north, and the city's medical district, 2 miles southwest. "It's that perfect spot in the middle where you get a taste of everything," says Jayce Kaughman, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Elevate. "You're not having to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle, but you're still nearby when you want to visit." With Joplin High School to the west and Kelsey Norman Elementary School to the south, it offers quick access to kindergarten through 12th-grade learning. Harmony Heights, along with Joplin High, was rebuilt after being leveled by the Joplin EF5 tornado in 2011. The modern construction and fresh landscaping, on top of the location, contribute to it continuing to be a desirable neighborhood.

Joplin High School students gain career and college advantages
Harmony Heights students may walk or drive to school. Joplin High School, the city's only high school, is just west. It earns a C-plus from Niche. During the 2014 rebuild, the Franklin Technology Center was moved to campus. It now offers 14 technical programs. The school continues to innovate, adding career academies in business and information technology, technical sciences, health services and more for the 2025 school year. Each academy will have themed pathways offering Dual Credit courses and Industry Recognized Credentials, or IRCs. "We're trying to set you up so you're in a better spot when you cross the graduation stage," says Principal Randy Oliver. Students can begin their kindergarten through 12th grade journey at Kelsey Norman Elementary School and South Middle School, both of which earn overall B-minus grades from Niche.
New Traditional homes with pride in ownership
This residential area is primarily Modern Traditional houses that were built here in the years following the 2011 tornado. These typically have a modern look with multiple gables facing the street and attached two-car garages, while young trees stand in front yards. Houses here tend to sell after an average of 9 days on the market, compared with the national average of 44 days. "Homes that were built right after the tornado in 2011 still hold their value and their look because the people who moved in took care of them," Kaughman says. "Most of those people were previously residents of Joplin who had lost their homes. Those are the people who love their yard, and they're almost in competition with everybody to have the best yard." Some midcentury homes are still standing on the neighborhood's south side. Regardless of age, homes can sell for between $130,000 and $280,000.
