Joplin High School students gain career and college advantages
Harmony Heights students may walk or drive to school. Joplin High School, the city's only high school, is just west. It earns a C-plus from Niche. During the 2014 rebuild, the Franklin Technology Center was moved to campus. It now offers 14 technical programs. The school continues to innovate, adding career academies in business and information technology, technical sciences, health services and more for the 2025 school year. Each academy will have themed pathways offering Dual Credit courses and Industry Recognized Credentials, or IRCs. "We're trying to set you up so you're in a better spot when you cross the graduation stage," says Principal Randy Oliver. Students can begin their kindergarten through 12th grade journey at Kelsey Norman Elementary School and South Middle School, both of which earn overall B-minus grades from Niche.Walking paths and artwork at Mercy Park
A crosswalk connects north across 20th Street to Sunny Jim Park, home to Joplin Little League since 1951. Families still pack the stands for spring and summer games. Parr Hill Park offers various ways for families to spend the day outdoors. The 2-acre green space features a splash pad, a playground, picnic shelters, fitness equipment and a dog park. Mercy Park is a popular spot for a walk, about 2 miles southwest. It serves as a passive green space and a symbol of reconstruction after the tornado, located on the former St. John's Hospital site. Walking paths weave around the park, passing 30 different bronze sculptures. At the top of a long staircase, Mercy Chapel offers a space to sit, reflect and view the whole park.New Traditional homes with pride in ownership
This residential area is primarily Modern Traditional houses that were built here in the years following the 2011 tornado. These typically have a modern look with multiple gables facing the street and attached two-car garages, while young trees stand in front yards. Houses here tend to sell after an average of 9 days on the market, compared with the national average of 44 days. "Homes that were built right after the tornado in 2011 still hold their value and their look because the people who moved in took care of them," Kaughman says. "Most of those people were previously residents of Joplin who had lost their homes. Those are the people who love their yard, and they're almost in competition with everybody to have the best yard." Some midcentury homes are still standing on the neighborhood's south side. Regardless of age, homes can sell for between $130,000 and $280,000.Networking and sipping at First Friday WineShare
Joplin events like First Friday WineShare draw residents to the downtown. Started in 2015, it highlights different downtown offerings with varying locations each month. Participants can add a bottle of wine to the sharing table, socialize and learn about a new locally run shop. Third Thursday has become one of the city's most popular events since it started in 2008, drawing thousands of visitors and over 100 vendors monthly. Harmony Heights also has its own social spaces. There are several churches in the area with Sunday morning worship services. Joplin Church of Christ has a monthly ladies' night out and a periodic men's cookout. No sidewalks but high walkability in Harmony Heights
Although there are no sidewalks, this is a low-traffic area where it's possible to walk. "Typically, the traffic you're getting in there is the residents coming home," Kaughman says. "If you are taking a walk in that neighborhood, you're going to see other families with their pets and children." Bordering the neighborhood's north side, 20th Street connects to Main Street, the city's primary north-south route that leads to Downtown Joplin, 2 miles north. United Airlines, flying out of Joplin Regional Airport 8 miles north, offers daily direct flights to Chicago and Denver.
