Convenient, mid-priced, family-friendly living
Many homes in Southridge were destroyed on May 22, 2011, when an EF-5 tornado ripped through south Joplin. That tragic event took many lives and destroyed many homes along the way, but today, the area has largely recovered. These days, Southridge appeals to homebuyers who want mid-priced, modern homes near the city’s medical district. Its location, paired with low crime scores, has made it popular amongst homebuyers with children, says Brandon Lehman, a Realtor with Keller Williams. "It's very family-friendly,” Lehman says. “You'll walk through and see kids playing in the streets."
Southridge is a neighborhood located in southwest Joplin.

Homes rebuilt after the tornado of 2011
Once packed densely with established trees and longstanding homes, this community is now known for its new construction as many homes were rebuilt after the tornado. It's typical to find modern farmhouses, ranch-style homes, split-levels and minimal traditional builds that are 1,900 square feet on average. For comparison, houses in surrounding communities such as Iron Gates, Cedar Ridge and West Village Estates are about 1,700 square feet. These larger homes also offer slightly larger lots, which are just over a quarter of an acre. Many residents have opted to use the extra yard space to build backyard swimming pools. “It’s a very nice area,” says Debbie McDonough, a broker at Keller Williams Market Pro Realty. “A lot of homes were rebuilt after the tornado, so there are a lot of larger, beautiful homes.” With houses selling between $290,000 and about $400,000, properties in Southridge are slightly more expensive than those in adjacent communities such as Iron Gates, but less expensive than Arbor Hills.

Proximity to hospitals and I-44
Lehman says Southridge’s location is one of its greatest appeals. “A lot of people are moving over there to be closer to the hospitals and medical school,” he says. “For anyone in the medical field, it’s a convenient location.”The Freeman Health System is Joplin’s largest health system and is rapidly expanding. Its primary building, Freeman Hospital, is about 1.5 miles southeast of Southridge and is surrounded by several smaller practitioners. Mercy Hospital is about 4 miles southeast of the neighborhood. Formally known as St. John’s Regional Medical Center, the hospital suffered extensive damage during the tornado of 2011. It was eventually demolished in 2013 and rebuilt nearly four years later. Kansas City University is also nearby. The private school of medicine specializes in Osteopathic Medicine, Clinical Psychology, Dental Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Along with being minutes from Joplin’s medical district, Southridge is 4 miles north of Interstate 44.
