Park Forest combines suburban calm with access to amenities
Streets lined with mature trees and easily accessible green space help Park Forest stay true to its moniker. The Northland-area Kansas City neighborhood strikes a suburban balance of tranquility and convenience. Park Forest is packed with homes built from the 1950s through the 1990s, but broad green lawns give each resident space. Some in the area are within walking distance of the namesake Park Forest Park, and all are minutes from multiple public schools and an Interstate 29 corridor that’s ripe with commercial amenities, including the Zona Rosa shopping center.
What homes look like and cost in Park Forest
Park Forest features a variety of ranch-style, split-level and New Traditional homes. You’ll find most of Park Forest’s more established houses in the neighborhood’s southeast corner, while ’80s- and ’90s-built homes make up much of the rest of the area. Many homes here have already gotten updates, whether it’s refreshed kitchens, replaced roofs or relatively new HVAC systems. Houses in Park Forest average roughly 2,000 square feet, well surpassing the citywide average of about 1,500 square feet. Fenced backyards and back decks are common outside, part of manicured lawns on lots around one-fifth of an acre.
Park Forest’s single-family homes sell for prices from the lower $200,000s to the upper $400,000s. The area also has some townhouses from the mid-$100,000s to the lower $200,000s. “There's been a lot of people reaching out to move to the Northland area,” says local Realtor Sean Van Horn of Living in Kansas City Realty with eXp Realty, who has over two decades of sales experience.

Neighborhood schools serve Park Forest students close to home
The Park Forest area is zoned for the Park Hill School District, which maintains an A-minus grade on Niche. Students may attend Prairie Point Elementary School, Congress Middle School and Park Hill High School, which are all in the neighborhood and all have ratings of at least B-plus. The district also has its own aquatics center, which neighbors Congress Middle, is home to Park Hill’s boys and girls swim and dive teams, and is open to the public for a fee.
Congress Middle School serves area students from grades 6 through 8.
Students in the neighborhood may start at Prairie Point Elementary School.

Outdoor attractions range from wooded trails to aquatic fun
The neighborhood’s Park Forest Park spans 10 acres between Northwest 73rd and 75th streets, and includes a playground and a paved trail. Plenty more green space is available just outside Park Forest as well. Some of the options include:
Barry Road Park, which has a play area, a picnic pavilion and tennis courts.
Amity Woods Nature Park, where there’s a secluded, mile-long paved trail that takes you through the woods and past a stream.
Tiffany Hills Park, which is home to an inclusive playground for children of various abilities, multiple athletic fields and the Springs Aquatic Center, with features like a lazy river and slides.
Park Forest Park features a play area.
Barry Road Park is among the green spaces just outside of Park Forest.

Where to shop and dine near Park Forest
The nearby I-29 corridor is flush with big-box stores and restaurants. Zona Rosa, about a mile away, anchors the offerings. An open-air shopping center, Zona Rosa includes stores such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Dillard’s, Old Navy, Michaels and Staples, plus restaurants like:
Swagat Fine Indian Restaurant, a spot that’s known for its lunch buffet
Anejo Modern Mexican Cuisine, a restaurant with a rooftop patio and bar
Smokehouse Barbecue, a place for hickory-smoked ribs, brisket and pulled pork with house-made baked beans
Bo Lings, a spot for traditional Chinese cuisine served in large portions
Granite City Food & Brewery, a restaurant with a brunch buffet and bottomless mimosas on Sundays
Retail choices outside of Zona Rosa in the I-29 corridor include Walmart, Target, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, JCPenney and Academy Sports + Outdoors, while some of the other restaurants close by range from Chick-fil-A to Texas Roadhouse to First Watch.
The Zona Rosa shopping center is about a mile from Park Forest.
The Shops at Boardwalk is among the commercial attractions in the Interstate 29 corridor.

I-29 links Park Forest to downtown and the airport
I-29 is also Park Forest residents’ connection to the rest of the city. Travelers can take the highway north to reach Kansas City International Airport, which is just about 7 miles away. The airport includes a $1.5 billion 40-gate terminal that opened in 2023 and was Kansas City’s largest single infrastructure project ever. “There’s lots of development happening in the area,” Van Horn says. Commuters can use I-29 to head south toward downtown Kansas City, which is 13 miles away. A handful of RideKC bus stops are also available just outside the neighborhood, providing public transportation to the area.
