A quiet neighborhood surrounded by Kennewick's greatest feature
While compact in size and residential in character, the neighborhood of Metaline is much more than a quiet, leafy section of Kennewick in Washington's Tri-Cities. Not only is this community the site of Washington state's largest pickleball courts, but Metaline borders some of the city of Kennewick's most notable features, from Columbia Park's waterfront trails to the city's bustling shopping scenes.

Single-story homes off Metaline Avenue
Metaline takes its name from Metaline Avenue, a thoroughfare that runs through this neighborhood and the West Highlands community to the east. While much of the housing dates to the 1950s through the 1970s, newer homes built in the 2020s add to Metaline’s aesthetic and market variety. Midcentury-built ranch-style homes vary in price from $285,000 to $420,000, while newer ranch-style and two-story buildings from the 2020s range from $430,000 to $480,000. Looping streets like Okanogan Loop and Payette Avenue feature large front yards with shrubbery and trees, while sidewalks and paved driveways sit before this community's houses. Because Metaline is separated from State Route 240 by two blocks and a canal, this neighborhood maintains a tranquil atmosphere.

Green spaces and disc golf in Metaline
Lawrence Scott Park forms part of this neighborhood's northern boundary, and this expansive green space is home to sports activities of every kind. The park features four baseball fields, and people often practice football in the green space. This park is notably home to Washington's largest pickleball facility; Nikki from Kennewick Parks and Recreation says, "We do have 14 pickleball nets, and Club 509 throws their pickleball tournaments there; they have exclusivity to courts 1-4, where beginners and advanced players can practice a couple times a week." This local pickleball club, like the well-established neighborhood around it, is still growing. “We just built the pavilion, so there’s a very large picnic shelter there for rent or ‘first come, first serve,’" Nikki says. "The park is also just across is the Chuck E. Cheese, so there’s easy access to other things for children." Just three blocks north of Metaline, Columbia Park is among the Tri-Cities’ most notable landmarks. This 400-acre stretch of riverfront greenery includes the Columbia Park Trail, a 4-mile stretch of the larger Sacagawea Heritage Trail. Not only does the eastern edge of this park host the castle-themed Playground of Dreams and the Columbia Park Bandshell, but the section closest to Metaline includes an 18-hole, par-3 disc-golf course and playground.

Coffee shops and malls
Though Metaline is primarily residential, two independent coffee shops sit in and around the neighborhood. Mocha Express has cultivated a loyal following of local customers who come back for both its coffees and its granita sorbets. Burlesque Brew Coffee, a drive-thru cafe located at the southern end of Metaline, offers creatively named coffees, smoothies and even “infused Red Bulls” that add flavors like strawberry, vanilla and pineapple to the popular energy drink. Metaline also immediately borders The Colonnade shopping mall on its western border, putting big-box stores like Best Buy and chain restaurants just a block away from Metaline residents. The nearby Columbia Square is a one-stop shop for both necessities and luxuries; a Target, T.J. Maxx, Burlington and many more retail giants share this sprawling retail center. Most notable, however, is the Columbia Center shopping mall across the street from Columbia Square. This mall is home to dozens of clothing and cosmetics stores and a food court. While Metaline has no restaurants of its own, eateries like the industrial-chic Proof Gastropub express local creativity through both their cuisine and through tapping into the Tri-Cities' booming craft brewery scene.
