A growing community surrounded by mountain ranges
Along U.S. Route 209, Kelder’s Farm stands out with its noteworthy lawn decor, named the “World’s Largest Garden Gnome” in the 2009 Guinness Book of World Records. Kelder’s Farm is one of the many family-owned farms scattered around Kerhonkson, a small hamlet tucked between Shawangunk Ridge and the Catskills. With landscapes that range from swaths of farmland to rugged, mountainous terrain, the great outdoors and small-town lifestyle draw residents to this rural community. That quality was especially noticeable during the 2020 pandemic, when cramped city dwellers longing for more space flocked to the area. “People came in droves after the pandemic,” says Deborah Medenbach, Realtor and associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices Nutshell Realty, who lives in town. “We’re only 100 miles from Manhattan. Internet access is key for remote workers, and we have good reception almost everywhere. I’ve been asked if the market has slowed recently, but I’m not seeing it. I’m still very busy.”
A one block strip of stores is the backbone of Kerhonkson's surprisingly active Main St.

Exploring the Minnewaska State Park Preserve
Residents are 10 miles north of the Shawangunk Ridge trailhead in neighboring Ellenville. Apart from panoramic mountain views, “the ridge is known for its world-class rock climbing,” Medenbach says, attracting a mix of hikers, bikers and rock climbers. Minnewaska State Park Preserve is home to 25 miles of trails, majestic waterfalls and watering holes for a quick dip. Three sparkling lakes are scattered throughout the preserve, but Minnewaska Lake is the most popular and accessible. A paved road leads to a parking lot and visitor center that anchors the lake, and a small beach boasts a dock and a roped-off swimming area. Awosting Lake and Maratanza Lake are only accessible by foot, while other trails cater to horseback riders and cross-country skiers.
In town, green spaces range from public parks and sports fields to forested nature trails. “We have an active rail trail system,” Medenbach says. A rail trail is a path that runs along old railroads tracks. It’s a common trend seen throughout the nation, as communities aim to improve quality of life and create more green spaces for residents. “One year, I biked all the way to Kingston. It’s also a safe, beautiful trail that offers shade and cooler temperatures in this summer heat,” Medenbach says. O&W Rail Trail spans 27 miles from Ellenville to Kingston, winding along old railroads. Smaller green spaces include the Gordon Davenport Memorial baseball field and the Town of Rochester Park, which features a playground, basketball court, and volleyball court.

Modest ranch-style and new contemporary homes
Housing styles range from the occasional manufactured home that can sell for less than $100,000 to cozy Cape Cod-style cottages and ranch-style homes, which range from the mid $200,000s to the upper $300,000s and often boast updated interiors. Colonial Revivals range from the $400,000s to the $700,000s depending on acreage. Renovated historic farmhouses and contemporary homes hidden behind a canopy of trees are priced from the $900,000s to $1.5 million. The surrounding region is known for its secluded modern multi-million-dollar estates priced as high as $5 million. Vacant lots are also for sale, ranging from the $30,000s for less than an acre to almost $3 million for 72 acres along Rochester Creek. Buyers should note that Rondout Creek is prone to localized flooding, and winding, steep roads can be hard to navigate during inclement weather.

Family-friendly events at Kelder’s Farm
U.S. Route 209 is a two-lane highway lined with small businesses and family-owned farms, and residents often opt to shop locally for fresh produce. “The Saunderskill Farms family has been here for more than 400 years,” Medenbach says. “They probably got their land from the king.” They offer a year-round indoor market, selling fresh to pickled vegetables, canned goods, dairy products and more. Kelder’s Farm is another locally famous market and destination for pick-your-own fruits, vegetables and flowers. Besides the gigantic garden gnome, Kelder’s Farm offers a range of activities and seasonal events. While there is a Dollar General in town, Medenbach notes that larger grocers like MyTown Marketplace are 10 miles north in Stone Ridge, and Walmart Supercenter is 5 miles south in Napanoch.
Kelder’s Farm offers over 30 family-friendly activities that include basketball hoops, slides, a playground, and even a 14-hole mini golf course. Patrons can strike up a game of corn hole or play a game of chess with life-size pieces. There’s even a ropes course and a fishing pond. Parents can enjoy a wine slushie on a hot day, while others can dig into their famous Gnomie Shake, topped with a donut and whipped cream. From August to September, locals can revel in the beauty of thousands of sunflowers during the Sunflower Extravaganza or enjoy an afternoon picking pumpkins or running through the corn maze during the Fall Harvest Festival.

Dinner dates at Mill & Main
Kerhonkson boasts a few small eateries and a growing restaurant scene. “Mill & Main Restaurant & Provisions is the nicest spot in town,” Medenbach says. With a modern retro interior and American fare fused with Latin, Caribbean, & Italian flair, it’s the go-to spot for brunch, lunch and dinner. “They also have a beautiful patio down by the creek.” Just next door, the Flying Goose Tavern is Kerhonkson’s newest addition, boasting a range of local beers, wines and a variety of cuisine from local pop-ups. “Rough Cut Brewing Co. is right along Route 44 and is a great spot for a hearty meal and a good beer after a hike,” Medenbach says. Arrowood Farms is another popular brewery up the road in Accord. More shopping and restaurants await in Kingston, 20 miles north. “The Big Chief Studio is also a large film company in town, so you often see famous actors strolling along the street,” Medenbach says.

Kerhonkson Elementary’s color run
The Rondout Valley Central School District serves the community and scores a C-rating on Niche. Elementary schoolers are split between the C-plus-rated Kerhonkson Elementary for pre-kindergarten through third grade and the C-rated Rondout Valley Intermediate for fourth through sixth grade. Kerhonkson Elementary hosts a color run at the end of the school year, where activities range from races to crafts and music. They also offer reading and math camps throughout the summer. Students may then attend C-plus-rated schools like Rondout Valley Junior High and Rondout Valley High School. All three Rondout Valley schools share a single campus.
Kerhonkson Elementary School has 209 and a student-teacher ratio of 9-1.

Getting around on Route 209
Although Kerhonkson is a rural community, public transit options are available, but many rely on personal vehicles to get around. “The Short Line bus comes up from New York City, and you can take the UCAT buses up to Kingston,” Medenbach says, referring to Ulster County Area Transit. The Short Line caters to city commuters and weekend visitors looking to escape the city. Kingston is about 20 miles north, and New York City is about 100 miles southeast along Interstate 87. New York Stewart International Airport is about 30 miles away, and Ellenville Regional Hospital is just 6 miles away.
