Kingston provides quiet living just west of Genoa
A former railroad hub during the mid-19th century, Kingston now offers small-town living less than five miles west of Genoa. “There's not much going on there," says Amy Smith-Heine, a managing broker with Re/Max Classic who is a lifelong resident of Genoa. "People typically find Kingston after looking to buy in Genoa, but not much separates the two." Kingston is a bit more rural because it’s smaller, but Genoa is right there for any needs.” Beyond its proximity to its larger neighbor, the DeKalb County community is defined by its quiet atmosphere and proximity to the outdoors.

Homes range from vintage cottages to 21st-century construction
Housing in Kingston includes a mix of historic homes, rural properties and a selection of newer construction. A patch of grid-like streets at the village’s center features cottages and National Folk styles dating back to the mid-19th century. Ranch-style homes, split-levels and New Traditional styles, built throughout the 20th century and into more recent years, are on spaced-out streets farther out. Houses near the railroad are subject to noise from the occasional passing train, but many locals consider it background noise. Crop fields surround homes in the village’s rural outskirts, where plots can reach up to five acres. Depending on size and condition, homes typically sell between $110,000 and $570,000. The community has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, below the national average of 4.

Outdoor recreation includes paddling, fishing and more
Kingston Park sits along the South Branch Kishwaukee River. It has shaded picnic areas, a baseball diamond and a public launch for getting on the water. “Kayaking and canoeing are huge in the area,” Smith-Heine says. “People also like to go hiking at Russel Woods Forest Preserve.” After heavy snow, the preserve becomes a popular destination for cross-country skiing and sledding. Kishwaukee River State Fish and Wildlife Area offers several spots for casting a line and is open for firearm and archery hunting during designated seasons.
