Growth before Intel announcement
Even before it was announced that Intel planned to build two computer chip factories 20 minutes to the north in the New Albany area, growth was happening in Union Township, about 30 miles east of Columbus. “People were already attracted to this area because of the rural aspect and the slower pace combined with proximity to downtown Columbus,” says Katie Richards, a Realtor with RE/MAX Town Center with nearly 30 years of real estate experience. “It’s rural now, but it’s getting ready to explode.” The plants are expected to open in 2025 and provide nearly 3,000 jobs.
From the 1890s to today
Union Township is true to its rural roots while allowing for new construction to accommodate the growth that is already happening. In the north part of the neighborhood near the village of Granville, known for late 1800s architecture, is an 1890 colonial home on 2 acres sold in the fall of 2023 for nearly $400,000. At the same time, new housing developments in subdivisions like The Reserves and Stone Creek off Deeds Road have houses built in the 21st century and could be up to $1 million. “A nice average price for this area is $350,000 to $400,000. If you found something under $300,000, it would be a miracle,” Richards says. “We had a housing shortage even before Intel announced the new jobs. This is probably going to exacerbate the situation.” Some houses are on large lots ranging from a few acres to 25. The space inside is also ample, with between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet.
Union has a variety of home styles.

Saddle up and head to the park
Infirmary Mound Park is an over 300-acre nature area that, as the name implies, was once an enormous prehistoric infirmary mound that has eroded over time due to farming. It’s now only two to three feet high. The site is preserved as a recreation area with several small playgrounds and hiking or horseback riding trails. “People bring their horse trailers and take advantage of the trails,” Richards says. The Paws 2 Play Dog Park offers canines four acres of off-leash fun. There’s also a lake with largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish. Buckeye Lake State Park is also close, totaling over 3,300 acres. There are plenty of swimming, boating, and fishing opportunities, as well as wildlife observation, especially birds and waterfowl.
Infirmary Mound Park is quite large.

Not isolated from groceries or a hospital
The city of Newark has a Giant Eagle and Kroger to stock up on groceries, which could be a 10 to 15-minute drive. Those in the southern end of Union Township may find it more convenient to shop at Kroger in Hebron. Licking Memorial Hospital is also located in Newark.
There is a fun playground at Infirmary Mound Park.
On-demand public transportation
Licking County, which includes Union Township, operates a transportation system through the county’s Board of Commission.
