Quiet rural town dodges development faced by neighbors
Twenty-five miles north of Beaumont sits a small country town of less than 2,000 people called Kountze. In recent years, Beaumont suburbs like Lumberton and Silsbee have seen growth due to movement out of the city, but Kountze has been somewhat immune to this development and maintained its rural, small-town feel. Nestled in the piney woods of the Big Thicket, the town is preferred by those who'd rather be further away from the city and aren't bothered by the distance from its amenities. The town is best known for housing the Hardin County Courthouse, and most people swing by Mama Jack's, a buffet-style restaurant, on their way in and out of town. "Kountze is very country. There's not much out there," says real estate agent Betty Cheek of Lumberton's RE/MAX All Properties. "But it's very peaceful, and you're only a few minutes from bigger towns like Lumberton and Silsbee. I would live there."
Manufactured homes, ranch-style abodes and country bungalows
"Kountze is much more rural than towns like Lumberton and Silsbee, so there's less inventory and less demand there," says Cheek. Kountze has a mix of older country bungalows, manufactured homes and newer ranch-style and traditional-style homes. The average home value here is about $235,000, with listing prices depending on the home's age and lot size, which ranges from less than an acre to 20 acres. Older manufactured homes can often be purchased for under $100,000, while twentieth-century ranch-style houses and bungalows usually list between $100,000 and $300,000. The most expensive listings in Kountze are newer ranch- and traditional-style homes, typically listing for upwards of $300,000.

The piney woods of the Big Thicket
Outdoor activity is abundant in Kountze. Home to the Big Thicket National Preserve, a heavily forested area where nine different ecosystems meet in Southeast Texas, Kountze offers no shortage of opportunities to enjoy the company of its well-preserved diversity of life. The park has nearly 40 miles of longleaf pine- and cypress-lined forested trails, which run alongside bodies of water like the Neches River and Village Creek, one of the most popular canoe streams in Southeast Texas. A popular trail for beginners is the Kirby Natural Trail, which has a 1.5-mile inner loop and a 2.5-mile outer loop, and more experienced naturalists opt for the Turkey Creek Trail, a 17-mile trail with various exit points. Free permits are available for hunting and trapping, and RV, cabin and tent camping are available at the Indian Springs Campground. Kids get to know their neighbors early at Kountze Little League Park, where boys and girls have played baseball on weekends for over 50 years. Kountze City Park is another popular weekend destination: kids play games on sports courts and soccer fields, younger siblings climb on playgrounds, families stop for snacks at the covered picnic areas and walkers and joggers lap the path around the park.
