Wellness District offers access to the riverfront, downtown La Crosse

La Crosse’s Wellness District is a small, mixed-use neighborhood tucked into the western edge of the city along the Mississippi River. It is split into two distinctive parts by an inlet. The east side is mostly residential, with a collection of single-family homes, duplexes and apartments. The west side, known as Isle La Plume, is anchored by a wastewater treatment facility. While the island is mostly industrial, it does feature a popular sports complex, a park and direct access to the river, across from which is Minnesota.

A small but diverse collection of homes on the west side of La Crosse

Single-family options are limited in number, but relatively diverse. Older homes featuring cottage-style and bungalow designs and larger midcentury designs stand out along quiet streets, several of which are truncated and offer an additional level of privacy. There is also a small collection of waterfront homes along Swift Creek on the neighborhood’s south side. There are not enough homes sold for an accurate price range. Roughly 85 percent of residents rent, and the median age is 35. Given that much of the neighborhood is surrounded by water, residents should be aware of the potential for flooding, which can affect insurance rates.
