Active community in the heart of Lafayette
About a mile northeast of downtown Lafayette, Hanna has an active community rooted in rich history. Several restaurants and organizations here have operated for generations, and homes can date as far back as 1900. As Lafayette housing prices surge, Hanna remains a relatively affordable option close to the growing amenities within the heart of the city. “There’s so much potential in Lafayette, and I know we hear that a lot,” says Andrew Smith IV, Executive Director of the Hanna Community Center. “But we’re not far from Chicago, we’re not far from Indianapolis at all. It really is a great place to grow up and to raise a family.” Hanna residents are particularly well-connected to local organizations offering a wealth of community resources. “If you know where to look you really can get a lot of support,” Smith says.

Hanna Community Center engages youth and seniors
The Hanna Community Center has played an essential role in the neighborhood since 1920s segregation, when Black community members formed a recreation center for local children. “When the original Hanna Center was built, it was built by the community, literally. They did all the fundraising, they sold pies, they did door-to-door knocks to raise the money to buy the land and build their own center,” Smith says. “You’d be hard pressed to find someone — especially on the north end of Lafayette — who hasn’t been a part of the Hanna Community Center.” Today, the multicultural center has diverse programming for youth and seniors and offers health screenings on site.
Neighborhood green spaces include Hanna Park and Linnwood Park, which both have a basketball court, playgrounds and picnic shelters within walking distance of homes.
