Lake Ketchum is a rural neighborhood close to natural recreation
Lake Ketchum is primarily a rural area with farmland and thick forestry surrounding a small lake, just 5 miles north of Stanwood, as the Skagit River flows west of the neighborhood. Residential properties are spaced out along country roads and many come with acreage. “It’s a pretty quiet community. There are a lot of privately owned lakefront properties in the area,” says Realtor Connie Moulaison with Century 21 North Homes Realty, who has over 20 years of experience.
Lake Ketchum’s single-family homes and lakefront properties
Most homes in Lake Ketchum are lined along country roads that branch off into gravel residential roads. Properties come with large lots of land and tall trees. Ranch-style homes built between the 1980s and 2000s are common, alongside split-levels and bi-levels. These houses span 1,200 to 2,400 square feet and cost $450,000 to $750,000. New Traditional multi-story homes with muted exteriors go for similar prices.
Lake Ketchum Road wraps around the lake, lending a handful of waterfront properties. These multi-story lakefront homes are from the 1960s through 1990s and have balconies, front porches and some with picture windows. Prices range from $750,000 to $950,000. Manufactured homes with land can also be found along the water and go for $375,000 to $550,000.
Heavy rain in the area may result in the flooding of both Lake Ketchum and nearby rivers, which is why most homeowners carry flood insurance. The City of Stanwood has special structural elevation requirements for new construction to prevent flood damage.
Water recreation along lakes and rivers, plus nearby parks
Lake Ketchum, itself, was originally overrun with lily pad blooms and algae. Snohomish County and the nearby community came together in 2014 and have since treated and purified the water. A public boat launch allows non-motorized boating, and visitors can also go swimming and fishing. “The lake is healthier than most lakes around now,” Moulaison says. “The water is crystal clear and looks beautiful. The fish swim right up to you on the shoreline.”
North of the neighborhood is the Skagit Wildlife Area, specifically the Wiley Slough section. The 18,000-acre wildlife habitat is home to bald eagles and salmon, with miles of island shorelines, mudflats, marshes and forests. Birdwatching and seasonal hunting with permits are popular activities.
Multiple hiking trails travel through the area, including the Big Ditch Trail, which has access to the Skagit River. Multiple parks in Stanwood are south of Lake Ketchum for additional recreation. Heritage Park has a playground, pickleball court, skate park and dog park. Farther north, Paintball Station is a facility in Milltown that hosts airsoft mission games for new and seasoned players.
Retail and restaurant options in Stanwood and Arlington
There are no designated areas for commerce in Lake Ketchum. Downtown Stanwood is about 5 miles south with local retail along 268th Street NW. There are various antique shops and Wit’s End Bookstore. Jimmy’s Pizza & Pasta is a casual Italian restaurant and Cady’s Cocina serves traditional Mexican cuisine. Farther east on 268th Street, there’s a QFC and Grocery Outlet. Fast-food options surround the grocery stores, including Jack in the Box and Starbucks.
Smokey Point in Arlington is another commercial hub, about 15 miles southeast. “It has all the big-box stores, plus hospitals and clinics,” Moulaison says. Name brands like Costco, Target and Lowe’s can be found at the Lakewood Crossing shopping mall.
B-rated Stanwood public schools
Families living in Lake Ketchum can send their kids to schools in the Stanwood-Camano School District. Stanwood Elementary and Stanwood Middle both earn B-minus grades from Niche and provide an English Language Learners Program. Stanwood High School offers Work Site Learning opportunities that allow students to earn high school credit in conjunction with garnering professional experience and provides Career and Technical Student Organizations such as SkillsUSA and the Technology Student Association. It receives a B grade.
Traveling along Lake Ketchum’s country roads
Lake Ketchum’s rural landscape and country roads require a vehicle to navigate. Pioneer Highway travels north to south, directly east of the neighborhood, and serves as the area’s main thoroughfare. Access to Interstate 5 is about 5 miles east and can be used to reach Seattle, about 55 miles south. Stanwood Station is the closest train station, almost 4 miles south, while the Seattle Paine Field International Airport is roughly 35 miles away.
