Modest-sized houses close to the water
Just north of eclectic downtown Lake Worth Beach, Florida is the neighborhood of Mango Groves, which is full of coastal cottages and some beach bungalows. While these houses are not on the water, they are minutes from the beach. These houses are small and are on the older side. Because of the age of the houses, some have been recently renovated. Most of the homes are from the 1920s to the ‘50s. “To be honest, the homes from the 1920s are more well-built than the 1950s,” says Dede Dehon, an artist and photographer at Artist’s Eye Galley and Boutique downtown, at the neighborhood's southern end. She has been a Lake Worth Beach resident for close to 45 years.

Artsy downtown
The Artist’s Eye Gallery is part of the downtown area that has been revitalized within the last few years. Part of that improvement has been the addition of murals on the side of buildings. “The city of Lake Worth Beach sponsored the effort and hired several artists to work on them,” Dehon says. “While we weren’t part of the effort, we have a mural on the side of our building, but it’s the second version because people didn’t like the first one. The second one pays tribute to the popular cottages of Mango Groves, so it’s much better.” Art is on display every February with the annual Street Painting Festival. Hundreds of artists gather to use the downtown streets as their canvas. It’s a performance art exhibition and not a competition. The art lasts until the next rain falls when everything gets washed away. However, the event happens rain or shine. It’s within walking distance for many in Mango Groves.

More than art
While there are many opportunities to enjoy art downtown, some consider eating as art, and that’s also plentiful. TooJay’s Deli, Bakery and Restaurant is a popular gathering place open until 9 p.m. most nights. In recent years, local media have honored the restaurant as the Best Sandwich Shop and Best Dessert in Palm Beach County. The restaurant also caters for events throughout the area. Another popular eatery is Dave’s Last Resort and Raw Bar, a seafood destination with oysters, clams and crabs. There are burgers and wings for those who love the turf rather than the surf. Grocery trips can happen at the neighborhood Publix close to downtown at Dixie Highway and Lucerne Avenue.

Majority are renters
Sixty-nine percent of the people in Mango Groves are renters, meaning these beach houses are attractive for “snowbirds” that come to live in the winter from the north. Because of the homes' age, the neighborhood attracts investors, and some permanent residents use their homes to rent out for Airbnb customers. More recent houses include condos and townhouses built from the 1980s to the 2000s, and monthly maintenance fees range from $250-$500 monthly. The price range for single-family homes is between $450,000 and $600,000. There are also small bungalows in Mango Groves. The square footage of these smaller homes is between 800 and 1,500 square feet.

Golf next to the Intracoastal
Those who love the links are close to 18 holes with a water view at Lake Worth Beach Golf Club. The nearly 100-year-old course is on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway and not far from the Atlantic Ocean. It’s one of the few courses located on the water, with the bonus of great views of the skyline of nearby Palm Beach. It’s a course with a player-friendly design, plenty of trees and holes with interesting dogleg turns. A short distance to the west is Sunset Ridge Park, with athletic fields, a playground, and tennis and basketball courts.
