Northwestside
Suburban Neighborhood in Lansing, Michigan
Ingham County 48906
Bungalows, ranch styles and bi-levels with character
"It's not a cookie-cutter neighborhood,” says Realtor Sue Dickinson, who sells homes in Northwestside with Five Star Real Estate. “The homes have their own character.” The neighborhood's most affordable houses are on the east side, just north of Grand River Avenue, which runs diagonally through the neighborhood. That's where mid-century, wood-exterior bungalows are priced from $70,000 to $160,000. These homes often have flower beds in the front yards and detached garages in the backyards. The rest of Northwestside's houses are south of Grand River Avenue. Brick ranch styles from the 1960s are priced from $140,000 to $275,000, while brick and vinyl-exterior bi-levels from the same period are priced from $270,000 to $330,000. "The property values are very reasonable for what you get," Dickinson says.Wilson Park, Horsebrook Park and Tecumseh Park
On the neighborhood's west side, Wilson Park has a playground, basketball court, picnic shelter and open field for sports. Just off Aragon Drive, locals plant crops and flowers in the Lansing Community Garden. Just north of Grand River Avenue, Horsebrook Park has a playground and wooded walking paths along a creek. Tecumseh Park has a basketball court, baseball field, playground and trails along the Grand River. People can launch canoes and kayaks at the park.Cumberland Elementary, East Intermediate School and J.W. Sexton High
Because of the Lansing School District's school choice policy, parents apply for their children to attend any school, and they are encouraged to choose the school closest to their home. Within the neighborhood, Cumberland Elementary educates prekindergartners through fourth graders. The nearby East Intermediate School offers classes for fifth and sixth graders. About 3 miles south of the neighborhood, J.W. Sexton High School educates seventh through twelfth graders. The school's Early College program allows students to earn up to 30 college credits. All three schools have C Niche ratings. About 52,000 undergraduates and postgraduates attend Michigan State University, about 6 miles southeast of Northwestside.Getting around Lansing
Bus stops line many of the neighborhood's streets, including Delta River Drive and Grand River Avenue. Central Region International Airport is immediately north of the neighborhood, causing some noise issues for residents. Downtown Lansing is less than 3 miles south of the neighborhood via Grand River Avenue and North Walnut Street.Alicia's Authentic Mexican Deli, King Subs and Lansing Mall
Restaurants line Grand River Avenue. Alicia's Authentic Mexican Deli advertises its burritos, quesadillas and nachos on a board above the front counter. King Subs sells wraps and other sandwiches out of a shoebox-shaped building. About a mile southeast of the neighborhood, beef and chicken rotate on vertical spits at Taqueria Monarca, a Mexican taco spot. People buy groceries at Gorman's Food Market on the neighborhood's east side. Residents can also travel less than 4 miles south to Lansing Mall, which has retailers like JCPenney, Best Buy and Men's Warehouse.
