Hillside Terrace
Paying homage to different states
Most of the homes are ranch-style and midcentury modern, but some Spanish-style and New Traditional can be found scattered throughout as well. Most homes have carports, but two-car garages are also present. Street parking isn’t uncommon, but is oftentimes more due to if the garage or driveway already has a car within. Sometimes a driveway will have an canopy over it, extending the shade in front of a garage. Ranch-style and midcentury modern homes begin around $210,000 and can reach around $400,000. Spanish and New Traditional homes occasionally have two story’s, but like the rest of the neighborhood, tend to be single-story. Prices are higher, beginning around $300,000 and reaching $440,000. Mature trees fill the area, creating some much-needed shade against the Texas heat, and sidewalks line the street.Neighboring schools to the west and fine arts at the high school
Hillside Terrace is part of the United Independent School District. The state streets attend Amparo Gutierrez Elementary School while the plant streets attend Clark Elementary School. The two schools receive a B-minus and C-plus, respectively, from Niche. Students then attend Clark Middle School which earns a B-minus. Clark Elementary and Middle School sit next to each other but are not in connecting buildings. J.B. Alexander High School receives an A-minus from Niche, offers Advanced Placement courses and has four fine art programs; orchestra, mariachi, choir and band.Park with bridge leading to the recreation center
On the eastern edge of the neighborhood, the NE Hillside Recreation Center primarily has indoor activities, but there is a bridge over the Zacate Creek that leads to the Blas Castañeda Park. This park has trees scattered throughout providing shade, with the playground and sections of the skatepark under the cover of canopies. On the northwest corner of Hillside Terrace sits Noon Lions Park. A smaller park, the area has two playgrounds for different ages.Next door to malls and local stores
While the Noon Lions Park is adjacent to the parking lots of Mall del Norte, there is no direct access between the park and the mall. Residents can go around Clark Elementary and Middle Schools to the south or follow Springfield Avenue north. Mall del Norte has over 100 stores, including Mega Furniture, Macy’s and JCPenney. Across McPherson Road, the eastern border, smaller local stores and restaurants are set up in a strip mall, including Tortas Yukon and Laredo Stitch Creations. There is an H-E-B, about a mile south.Public and international travel within 5 miles
Two buses run by El Metro Transit go through the neighborhood. Interstate 35 is two blocks west of Hillside Terrace. Speed humps are also found throughout the neighborhood, although the speed limit only rises to 30 miles per hour. The Laredo International Airport is about 5 miles east.Celebrating Mexican culture
The Laredo Sister Cities Festival in July celebrates Mexican culture with vendors coming to showcase their wares. “The community is one that holds on to their heritage,” says Wright-Martinez. “For birthdays and Mother’s Day, they go back to traditions and try to continue to keep that alive.”
