Coral Heights is a short drive from Clearwater and major beaches
When it comes down to it, Coral Heights is a standard, no-frills Florida neighborhood about 20 miles west of Tampa. Its subdivisions, which frame some of southern Largo’s more industrial areas, share many of the qualities that draw people to the state as a whole: warm weather, a lack of state income taxes and lower home costs compared to other parts of the country. Clearwater is 8 miles away, but major roads make it relatively easy to also reach St. Petersburg and Tampa. Perhaps more importantly for some residents, a few major Gulf beaches are about 20 minutes away. “So it’s kind of the best of several worlds, really,” says Jeff Copeland, the broker and owner of Copeland Morgan LLC. “From the weather to the cost, not to mention the beaches.”

Single-family houses and townhouses starting in the $200,000s
Small ranch-style homes and simple Cape Cods and bungalows are common in Coral Heights. They usually start at around $280,000 and can climb to nearly $400,000. Occasionally, a completely renovated house will come on the market for over $400,000, but it doesn’t happen often. Townhouses here can cost between $225,000 and $400,000.

Largo High School earns an A-minus and has a spot among Niche’s list of top five standout high schools in the Tampa area. It offers certifications in childcare, welding, Adobe and more.

Access to major roads and a nearby airport and hospital
Ulmerton Road runs along the southern part of Coral Heights, and it takes just a few minutes to reach U.S. Highway 19, which is usually just called U.S. 19, and U.S. 19 Alternate. Smaller main roads like state Road 693 and state Road 686, otherwise known as East Bay Drive, are also a short drive away. Bus stops dot many of the neighborhood's larger roads, including Ulmerton, Belcher and Starkey roads. Copeland says easy access is another reason people are attracted to the area. St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport and HCA Florida Largo Hospital are both about 5 miles away.

Local parks nearby and an easy drive to major beaches
At the edge of the area, Belcher Soccer Complex hosts soccer games on its collection of fields. Largo Central Park Nature Preserve is about 4 miles away, offering walking trails and a 5-mile kayaking route. The park's wildlife includes otters, alligators and bats. Coral Heights is also only 8 miles from major beaches like Belleair Beach or Indian Rocks Beach, a drive that takes about 20 minutes, and a 30-minute drive from Clearwater Beach. “Clearwater Beach is kind of famous,” Copeland says, adding that Honeymoon Island is also incredibly popular. “The Gulf beaches are really one of the big draws.”

Shopping and dining along Ulmerton Road
While most restaurants along Ulmerton Road are chain fast-food places, Speggtacular is a local favorite for breakfast items like crepes and eggs Benedict. Finley’s Irish Pub & Eatery is also nearby, offering classic dishes like fish and chips and shepherd’s pie alongside live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Ulmerton Road also has a smattering of local businesses, including a large secondhand bookstore called Book Rescuers. The store takes up an entire warehouse and sells most of its books for $3 or less. They also sell CDs and vinyl. For groceries, Walmart is about a mile away. A little over 2 miles away, Paradise Shops of Largo and Largo Mall offer a collection of restaurants, big-box stores and a movie theater. There’s a Publix and a Target as well as shops like Marshalls, Bath & Body Works and PetSmart.

Annual events thrown by the city of Largo
Many residents attend Largo's community gatherings. Among the city’s most popular events is a Fourth of July fireworks show in Largo Central Park, and Copeland says there’s a big holiday festival there that features a train ride for young children alongside Christmas light displays, crafts and live music. The park also hosts summertime concerts or musicals at its performing arts center.

Hurricane season in Coral Heights
Hurricane season is a big part of life in Florida, but Coral Heights benefits from being an inland community without a lot of nearby water sources. While the area has an extreme risk of high winds, its homes are not in flood zones.
